Orienteering Workshop

undefined

This workshop is geared to get you up to speed in using a compass and map to navigate yourself within any terrain. There are two orienteering events on the calender, which this workshop will help prepare you for the actual events.

undefinedI'll provide the maps however, you'll need to purchase a compass. The compass you'll need should look like the compass to the left. You will be able to purchase this compass at any major retail store with a sporting good section. The compass should cost around $6.00 dollars.

What to bring:

- Compass (what you've purchased)

- brown bag lunch

- water (bring plenty of water)

What to wear:

- Light hiking shoes or trail running shoes

- Long athletic pants and long sleeve shirt

This workshop will be designed like a circuit training. I will create groups of five to six individuals for the circuit training. There will be three workshop stations for each group and a mini orienteering course to complete. Let's have fun within nature.

What's the schedule:

9:00 am - Introductions

9:30 am - begin circuit training

* station #1: reading the map with contours.

* station #2: using the compass with the map.

* station #3: becoming familiar with the orienteering

stations.

* Start the mini orienteering course.

12:00 pm - Break for lunch

1:00 pm - Closing

You can pick one up at REI in Berkeley. They are right on San Pablo at Gilman.

Adrienne, buying a compass is like buying a car. You have the Mercedes Benz and BMW; then you have the Honda and Toyota; then you have the Ford and General Motors.

The compass in the photo above is like the Honda and Toyota; which can be purchased at the following stores; Target, Walmart, Big 5 sporting good. The brand name will be called "Colman".

Thanks, Cliff! That makes perfect sense. Toyota it is for now. :-)

Hello everyone, I am completely new to compass shopping. Can you recommend any good sporting goods stores in Oakland? Or is it as simple as a Target run? Looking forward to the fun :-)

That was a great question Leslie. I have three kids all under 10yrs old. I was thinking this would be a fun activity for us to do as a family. Maybe I should go to the orientation to see if its s good fit.

I recommend children at the age of 10 and older to participate in orienteering. It all depends on your pace too. For example, a family can be a group to themselves so their pace is appropriate for their children. I first brought my children, when my youngest was seven years old. It was easy for him, because he was a cubscout and he was use too running around off trail within nature. Please use your parental disgrestion. If you still question if it would be good or not, feel free to come to the orienteering workshop. The orienteering workshop will have a miniture course you can test out with your children.

Hopefully I have answered your question, if not, feel free to contact me so I may provide further detail.

    Thanks,

    Cliff.
