HISTORIC FAIRMOUNT PARK WALKING TOUR

  • 3 days ago · 9:45 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

About 8 miles or so at an easy pace (2.0 mph +/-). See the historic mansions of east Fairmount Park (Mount Pleasant, Rockland, Ormiston, Laurel Hill, Woodford, Strawberry). We pause at each mansion to admire it's beauty and learn a little of it's history. I'll, also, share my limited knowledge about some other interesting things we will be passing on our journey through this magnificent urban park. We will take a guided tour inside Strawberry Mansion. Tickets prices will be $6.00 to $8.00. See my posting below. We will see Strawberry Mansion all decked out in it's colonial style Christmas finery. See how our wealthier ancestors celebrated Christmas. Restrooms available at Lloyd Hall, during the tour and one or two porta-pots along the way. Lunch stop will be at the picnic tables  behind the mansion. Group size is limited to 25. Sign up early to avoid disappointment. Please don't sign up if you are in a hurry. I will not be rushing through this walk. However, I will limit my remarks at each stop so that we can arrive at Strawberry Mansion in time for our 12:00 noon guided tour. Bring your cameras with fully charged batteries; there will be many excellent photo opportunities on this walk and inside Strawberry Mansion. No flash photography permitted inside the mansion. Cross Ben Franklin Bridge into Phila., Take Vine St. expressway (I-676 West) to 22nd St. (Art Museum) exit. Turn R. & go short distance, then Left onto Ben Franklin Parkway. Take Parkway past Art Museum onto Kelly Drive. When you see boat house row & the new Lloyd Hall public building on your left, turn right into the street directly across Kelly drive from these buildings (Sedgely Drive). Park on either side of this street and walk back to Lloyd Hall across Kelly Drive. Heavy rain or snow (or forecast of same) will postpone to Wed. Dec. 14th. Check the meetup message board on Tues. Dec. 6th between 7:00 & 8:00 pm for my FINAL decision on this. No pets.  Bring lunch, beverages & raingear. Please take notice of the 9:45 am hike start time and allow adequate travel time. I need to start the walk promptly at 9:45 am. Traffic on I-676 West can be slow during morning rush hour. If the ramp to I-676 West seems to be at a stand still, local Vine St. may be a better alternative. I must start the hike on time so that we can enjoy the morning and arrive at Strawberry Mansion for the noon tour.  Because of the popularity of this walk in the past, I must limit it to Outdoor Club of South Jersey Members.

Is there long term parking near the meeting place?

    • Jerry G.

Patricia: As per my write up, you cannot park in the lot right at Lloyd Hall. This lot is closely monitored by parking police and will be ticketed if it remains there more than 2 hours. Park on Sedgely Drive (either side as long as there is no sign to the contrary). We have never had any trouble parking there as it is patrolled by Philadelphia Police.

I have opened this event to 25 participants instead of the original 20 maximum. The reason for this is that usually a few people have last second issues that prevent them from showing up. Even if we have more than 20 people, I'm sure the tour guide will not turn us away. The weather forecasters seem to have removed the possibility of showers from the forecast, so the HIKE IS ON! I plan to keep us almost entirely on paved surfaces all morning so that we don't track any mud into Strawberry Mansion. I think you will all enjoy this, especially those who have not been on any of Fairmount Park Mansions hikes before.

Just found out that ticket price will be $8.00 per person if we pay individually at the door. However, we can get a group discount (groups of 10 to 20) of $6.00 per person if I pay for the entire group at once when we arrive. So try to have $8.00 in cash with you and I'll try to collect $6.00 from each of you either at the starting point or at Strawberry Mansion to get the group discount. If this doesn't work out as planned, we will just pay $8.00 individually at the door

The colonial style Christmas decorations are only available to be seen up until Dec. 18th. Then they start taking them down, according to the tour guide. Believe it or not there is another tour group who have reserved the 11:00 am tour on the same day. This is a very popular activity.
