We have a great collection of day hikes, but it's time for an exciting new addition and this one certainly ticks that box.

• See the mysterious Long Man of Wilmington hill carving which is several hundred years old

• Visit an ancient smugglers Inn

• Visit the sunniest place in Britain which conveniently happens to be on the coast :-)

• Hike the famous South Downs chalk hills

• Explore rural Sussex and it's picture postcard villages that time has forgotten

• End up at the coast for post hike drinks

Walk Description

We have 5 hikes already that are along the breath taking South Downs and this is the 6th. We shall start our trail in the depths of rural Sussex on a classic route that takes in sleepy villages with thatched cottages and ancient time forgotten rural churches as we explore the Sussex Weald.

We'll start off at a reservoir and we'll get an early glimpse of this ancient hillside figure known locally as the Long Man which will grow larger and larger until we're standing at it's feet. We will then follow a hilly and in places elevated trail with the sea being the next destination to which we'll walk. We'll finish up on the coast in Eastbourne which has the envious title of being the sunniest place in Great Britain. We'll head on to a pub as we usually do for some well deserved drinks before heading back to London.

Nobody knows the exact origins of the Long Man carving but it's believed to date from the 1500s or 1600s

Transport & Meeting Point

We'll meet at Victoria station from 8:45am and leave the meeting point at 8:55 for the 9:06 train

We'll meet between WHSmith (no 34) and the stall called Breadbox (no 29) - both of which can be seen on the map here of our meeting point: http://goo.gl/LCf81

Planed return time to London of 7:28pm (we have a group train ticket and you are committed for the day until then)

Food

We'll stop during the walk for a snack lunch so please bring food and drink. We’ll visit a pub after the walk where we can get refreshments.
