Snowdonia Uncovered - The Glyders Mountains in TOUGH WINTER CONDITIONS

  • to

  • This location is shown only to members

  • Price: GBP129.00 /per person

    Refund policy

  • Due to demand we are putting on a tough, winter conditions Snowdonia adventure! For many people this would be hell as the weather is likely to be brutally cold, very wet and pretty "grim" but for a small number, this could be the one of the best hiking trips they do!

WARNING: Full waterproofs (trousers and jacket), proper hiking footwear (waterproof hiking boots) and warm clothes are essential otherwise you would not be able to take part in the hike. Hat and gloves are strongly advisable given the brutal weather that is likely and should be considered essential too.

    Highlights:

    • Fair likelihood of snow and tough winter weather - could be wet, windy/stormy and likely to be bitterly cold

    • Traverse Glyder Fawr and Gylder Fach and visit the famous Cantilever

    • Climb Y Garn - at the edge of Snowdonia and Ireland can be seen on a clear day

    • TOUGH - this is only for experienced hikers with the correct kit and who will enjoy likely ghastly winter conditions of probably below freezing temperatures and possibly snow

    • Small group of just 22 members with 2 trip organisers

    • Exclusive use of an old Coach House high in the mountains - hired just for our group

    • Superb challenge to set yourself to finish 2016 with!

    • Great training for anyone doing any tough mountain hikes. Sir Edmund Hillary trained in Snowdonia in the winter for his attempt and success at becoming the first person to summit Mount Everest

Lots of us have hiked Mount Snowdon – it’s the highest mountain in Wales, but very few would argue it’s the best and there's so much more to the Snowdonia Mountain range. For this trip we’ll be showing you the hidden gems of the Snowdonia National Park that most people miss out on in their quest to bag Mount Snowdon itself. This is perfect for those of us who’ve hiked Snowdon, are experienced hikers and want a new, more exhilarating challenge in winter conditions in the Snowdonia Mountain Range. An above average level of fitness is also required as well as mental toughness

WEATHER - This trip will go ahead whatever the weather conditions and snow is reasonably possible. The hostel is on the fairly major road the A498, you may need to drive through snow to get to it (although unlikely). Only sign up if you are happy with this.

Photos: All photos were taken by Outdooraholics hike leaders from previous trips, so are of the sort of views that you'll see on the actual hikes that we do

    Weekend Description

The names North Ridge of Tryffan, the Cantilever and Devil’s Kitchen are legendary and provide some of the most superb hiking in Wales.

The hikes on offer this weekend are tough and demanding (due to both likely weather conditions and also pretty tough hikes too) and not for anyone new to hiking. Both hikes may also (weather permitting) possibly involve some scrambling and hiking over steep, rocky/boulder ground off the paths. An above average level of fitness is required. Hiking boots with ankle protection are essential. If you are in any doubt about your abilities please get in touch before signing up.

    ITINERARY

    Friday 9th December

Head over to our accommodation in the Snowdonia National Park. Below is a photo of the coach house we have hired exclusively for our group

    Our hostel:

    Saturday 10th December

Enjoy a traverse of Glyder Fawr and Glyder Fach with Outdooraholics. Climb these two major Peaks viewing (and standing) on the famous Cantilever - see the fantastic pictures. Descent is through the equally famous Devils Kitchen rocks. Views include Snowdon and many of the major Peaks of North Wales.

We cannot give you any details on the route - everything will depend upon the weather conditions on the morning of the hike.

    Sunday 11th December

Day 2 involves climbing Y Garn. You may not have heard of this smaller peak, but it is on the end of a ridge on the extreme end of the range. Views are superb and can include Ireland. Equally good are views inland to Snowdon from a different angle.

We cannot give you any details on the route - everything will depend upon the weather conditions on the morning of the hike.
