Hillfield, Cheddar, BS27 3HN
Outdooraholics are off to the Mendip hills within Somerset designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Stunning landscapes of steep slopes are home to the largest and one of the most spectacular natural sights in England - Cheddar Gorge. Situated on the northern edge of the village of Cheddar, this dramatic limestone gorge stands at 450 feet high and spreads across almost 5km. Formed under the sea 300 million years ago, Cheddar Gorge lends its name to many things - cheese, caves, flowers and Britain's oldest complete skeleton buried in Gough’s Cave 9,000 years ago.
Many of those who visit the area are unaware of the outstanding diversity of landscape and numerous exciting hiking trails. We will introduce you to the best Cheddar has to offer, therefore we’ve put together a trip which is an awesome mixture of hiking and cultural exploration. We're hiking on Saturday and exploring England's smallest city on Sunday. You’ll have the opportunity to sign up for an exhilarating Sunday activity - caving.
**Please, be aware that caving must be pre booked and there are only 9 spaces available for this, please click here to book: http://www.meetup.com/Outdooraholics/events/235293649/
Once these 9 spaces are filled, it will not be possible to add any more so please do book early
We will also have 2 hike leaders to offer a variant and different pace on Saturday.
• Breath-taking hike along the top of Cheddar Gorge - England’s largest gorge.
• Visit Mendip Hills - designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
• Visit and explore England's smallest city- Wells
• Optional activity of caving on Sunday
• Explore Cheddar - the home of Cheddar Cheese
• A choice of 2 hikes on Saturday with 2 hike leaders
• A closer trip to London than usual - only about 2.5 hours driving from London
Photos - All photos were taken by the hike leaders on the recce trip, so are of the views that you'll see on the actual hikes that we will be doing
On Saturday, we’ll be taking upon a revitalising circular hike along the top of Cheddar Gorge before heading North to explore the magnificent Mendip Hills - an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Our hike will reward us with one of England's most iconic landscapes embellished with rugged limestone features and breath taking views from the gorge.
On we’ll be heading off to discover England's smallest city - Wells. This wonderful well-preserved medieval city is bursting with history dating back to Roman times. The city was settled because of the natural springs that bubbled up in the Gardens of the Bishops Palace. They still do to this day.
Village Attractions include:
• Wells Cathedral (dating to 1180) - FREE entry
• Bishops Palace and ruined Abbey (chargeable entry)
• Visit Vicars Close - the only completely medieval street remaining in Britain
For the adrenaline junkies we’ve arranged a Sunday caving to one of the most diverse caves within the area - Goatchurch Caven. This cave is an awesome venue for beginners and a great opportunity to try out something new and explore the underground.
Friday 13th January
Head over to our accommodation in Cheddar. We’ll be staying at a lovely traditional cottage. After settling in, we’ll have time to explore the hostel and get to meet the others on the trip over a good drink.

Sunday’s hike: NO HIKE :-)
We are going to visit the picturesque city of Wells - England's smallest city. Its population, recorded in the 2011, was only 10,536 inhabitants. But the city has had its city status since medieval times because of the presence of Wells Cathedral.
After a brief introduction to the city, you’ll be able to explore some of the attractions before enjoying the local cafes and visit a pub/restaurant for lunch.
An exciting optional activity for Sunday is caving to Goatchurch Caven. Thrilling experience in a maze-like cave known to be one of the best caves in the area for those new to caving.
