It's become an Outdooraholics tradition to see in the first weekend trip of the New Year with a visit to the sea and we have this superb trip with great food and the Outdooraholics wedding couple Tracie and Andy running it so a big dose of fun guaranteed!!!
This is the first of our two trips exploring the awesome Jurassic Coast.
This UNESCO World Heritage coastline is world-renowned and outstanding for both it’s natural beauty and historic significance. It’s been proclaimed by geomorphologists and geologists as one of the most significant research sites in the world. With its fossils and unusual coastal features the coastline has been contributing to the study of earth sciences for over 300 years.
Both trips explore contrasting ends of this 96 mile coastline and offer some of the finest coastal hikes in the world.
On this trip we visit the quieter end of Jurassic Coast. In stark contrast to the white chalk cliffs on our Lulworth Cove trip, the red cliffs we will explore on this trip were formed in a baking dessert 240 million years ago at a time when dinosaurs were starting to appear. Thus the name Jurassic Coast - after the numerous dinosaur and fossil finds.
Join us to explore this stunning history-packed coastline - England’s only natural “UNESCO World Heritage Site”.

Although gentler than many of our weekend hikes, in the true Outdooraholics spirit, we have lined up hikes which go through picturesque paths that stun with magnificent views and show nature’s creativity. Our exciting coastal hikes will take place in contrasting sections of the Jurassic coastline where cliff-top views and sea air will take us away from the city buzz.
On Saturday, we’re off to the South West Coast where stunning red cliffs and narrow coastal paths make for a spectacular hiking experience.
Sunday is saved for circular hike along Golden cap - a hill and cliff standing at 191 metres (627 ft) which is the highest point on the South coast of Great Britain.
We’ll be staying in a lovely Arts and Crafts house hired exclusively for our group and set in its own grounds. It is conveniently situated on the edge of Beer - a picture-postcard fishing village nestled in Lyme Bay.
Friday 6th January
Head over to our accommodation in the coastal fishing village of Beer, Devon. We're staying in this delightful Arts and Crafts mansion. The village of Beer boasts with its small fleet of fishing boats and is surrounded by stunning white chalk cliffs - it’s a great place to explore after the hikes.
Saturday 7th January
Saturday's hike: Sidmouth to Beer
Distance:[masked] miles (16-17 km)
Walking time: About 4/5 hours of walking with several hills
This hike follows a breathtaking trail along the coast from Sidmouth to Beer. A memorable hike entirely within the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The section from Beer to Branscombe has been featured as one of the 'Sunday Times' top ten walks in England. Our trail forms part of the South West Coastal path and runs from Beer over Hooken Cliffs to Branscombe Mouth. The views across Lyme Bay and the red Triassic Devon cliffs are spectacular. The coastal hike is varied and offers stunning countryside views, majestic cliffs and trails through woodland.
This hike richly rewards those exploring it’s undulating paths with some truly memorable landscape views.
After our hike on Saturday we shall have some free time to explore the village, before heading on to a good little local restaurant for some tasty dinner
Sunday 27th November
Sunday's hike: Golden Cap circular
Distance: 6-7 miles (10-11km)
Walking time: About 2 to 3 hours of walking with several hills
On Sunday we’re taking in Golden Cap - highest hill on Britain’s southern coast (191m). We’ll be exploring the coast of West Dorset where the white cliffs are replaced by a mixture of other sedimentary rocks and the area is quite different to the one few miles further east.
Golden Cap tops a series of steep hills and boasts with the broadest view of the Jurassic coast. The top of the cliff is sandstone which formed 100 million years ago and the striking golden, orange and yellow colours which give the hill it’s name. The ascent to the hill, although requiring effort, rewards with spectacular scenery and on a clear day offers views as far as Dartmoor.
