Brand new hike for October 2016 :-) :-) :-)
Come and join us for a gorgeous trail across the chalk escarpment of the South Downs hills on a linear route from far inland at Amberley and hiking to the sea at Shoreham by Sea!
A new hike for Outdooraholics for Autumn 2016 and at 25km one of our longest day hikes. Only suitable for experienced hikers!
• A spectacular hike along the South Downs ridge
• End up in the historical town of Shoreham by Sea
• Views of Lancing College - one of the most famous and dramatic looking schools in Europe with the largest school chapel in the world: >Click here<
• Ever increasing coastal views as we approach our destination by the sea
• Hiking the South Downs - one of the best National Parks for hiking in the South of England
Photos. All photos were taken by the hike leader on previous trips to other parts of the South Downs - we have no shots from this hike yet but these are similar views...
We'll start off in the historic and picturesque village of Amberley with it's picture postcard thatched cottages. Our hike crosses another long distance path - the Monarch Way - made famous as the escape route King Charles 2 used in 1651 after his defeat at the battle of Bosworth. We'll get views of the impressive gothic school Lancing College - in the perfect Harry Potter Style, but amazingly it never actually appeared in any of the Harry Potter films. Well then continue our hike with fantastic and far reaching views from the South Downs and as we make our approach to the sea we pass nearby Shoreham airport - the oldest commercial airport in the world with a protected 1936 art deco terminal building that plays host to many films including the Da Vinci Code, Agatha Christie's Poirot and the Woman in Gold. We then finish our hike in the historic fishing town of Shoreham by Sea for a well earned drink and rest.
Please note: This hike is longer and tougher than many of our day hikes from London with several sizeable hills to hike up, please only sign up if you're happy with this and keeping up a decent brisk pace (not an amble). This is not a hike for anyone new to hiking!
Transport & Meeting Point
We'll meet at Victoria station at 8:15am and leave the meeting point at 8:30 for the 08:49 train
We'll meet between WHSmith (no 34) and the stall called Breadbox (no 29) - both of which can be seen on the map here of our meeting point: http://goo.gl/LCf81
Planned return time to London of 8:07pm (we have a group train ticket and you are committed for the day until then)
