What we're about

The "Over 40's" is a guideline, and by no means set in stone. Whatever the age though, we are always a really friendly bunch and nobody ever finds it difficult to fall straight in with the group at their first meeting.

Our events are mainly based around the Essex/East London area, but we do venture further afield on occasion. For instance, the odd day trip to Southend has been a favourite for a couple of years now.

I hope to see you at the next event.

Chingford to The Owl Pub Garden - Circular Walk

Royal Forest Brewers Fayre

By popular demand to bring back pubs, I looked for one where we can sit in the garden & surrounding grounds, and there's enough room to make sure we get some space. It also has to be close enough to the start point for a circular walk, and said start point needs to have both parking and public transport. That turned out to be a bit of a mission, lol. Many of you on the last walk came from around Chingford, the parking is great around the Royal Forest Hotel, the station is round the corner, and the pub fits the bill perfectly. It is a lovely pub in beautiful surroundings too. So we'll start at the Royal Forest Hotel once again, and go off to a different part of High Beech where you can either have a pub lunch outside, or bring your own food for another mini-picnic before we circle back to the start point. The Royal Forest will be open by 15th, but the meet point is still out front, and you can grab a coffee from their machine or Butlers should you so desire. We'll meet at 11am, and be on our way shortly afterwards. Lets all please be mindful of at least one metre distancing, and be respectful of anyone who would prefer a two metre gap. Attendees always naturally spread out into mini-groups, and with people walking at different paces, we usually end up with small groups walking a small distance apart. Whilst we have the COVID rules in place, lets please ensure that we don't have more than six people together, and that any mini-groups are at least five metres apart. Thank you. The usual £1.50 contribution towards Meetup's fees will apply, please try to avoid shrapnel, as I can end up with buckets of it. There is a free car park opposite the Royal Forest, and another one round the corner in Bury Rd. For those coming by train, turn right out of Chingford Station (no engineering works showing on TFL's site), and its a massive pub five mins up the main road (on the left hand side). Chingford is also served by many buses http://content.tfl.gov.uk/bus-route-maps/chingford-a4-0718.pdf RISK WARNING/DISCLAIMER: Please remember that as with any physical activity, there can be dangers associated with hiking/walking, especially around waterways, forests, farms and countryside. Please dress appropriately, including sturdy shoes. Please bring any necessary medication with you. You will need to be sufficiently fit to walk several miles at a moderate pace. We may occasionally cross or walk short distances on roads; country and woodland tracks can be muddy or slippery; animals may be encountered on occasion. INSURANCE: If either yourself or any guests you bring along require insurance for this walk, then you must arrange this yourselves. Bank Hol Circular Walk: Enfield (Turkey St London Overgrnd) to Pub in the Park

Is this a historic building, or a lovely Toby Carvery in the middle of a beautiful country park? Its actually both! By popular demand to bring back pubs, I look for venues where the garden & surrounding grounds become one, This gives enough room to make sure we get space and distance, regardless of whether the pub is busy or not, and allows a picnic option for those who prefer. It also has to be close enough to the start point for a circular walk, and said start point needs to have both parking and public transport. That turned out to be a bit of a mission. So, lets meet on the green facing the exit at Turkey St Station, which is on the London Overground from Stratford, Liverpool St, Chingford, Waltamstow, Liverpool St and others (more details below). There is easy parking in many side roads by the station, and I will message some tips out when Fred & I have pre-walked it. We'll go through Myddelton House Gardens (if they have re-opened by then) https://www.visitleevalley.org.uk/en/content/cms/nature/gardens-heritage/myddelton-house-gardens/#explore-the-gardens, and do the same at Forty Hall Gardens & Parkland (already re-opened) https://www.fortyhallestate.co.uk/page/gardens-parkland/ Then we'll go on for a walk around the stunning Whitewebbs Country Park, ending up at the Toby Carvery for lunch. The Toby is right there in the park - a beautiful Elizabethan building with masses of space out back. Bring a picnic if you prefer, as the pub garden and the park are pretty much one and the same. I have been to this park and Toby before, and both are dazzling. Afterwards, we'll complete the circular walk back to the station. If you're travelling by train, its Stratford London Overground, change at Hackney Central over the walkway to Hackney Downs, and onto a Cheshunt Train for Turkey St. Hackney Downs is also on the Chingford line for those coming from that neck of the woods. If you're coming from Liverpool St, no change is necessary. If you stay out of zone 1 though, the fare is a flat £1.50 from anywhere in zones 2-6. Buses 121 & 279 serve Turkey St, if that helps anyone. Watch out for driver tips soon. Lets all please be mindful of at least one metre distancing, and be respectful of anyone who would prefer a two metre gap.
