• [TONIGHT] Impromptu Social Night at the Swan & Castle Pub
    • What we'll do As you may know, Oxford Hackspace had to close its doors in its current location last night at midnight, due to sponsorship ending. Wish us luck: a new era for our maker and geek community starts now. Various developments are in the works as to what happens in March and April, and more info will be available shortly, but in the meantime, a few of us are holding an impromptu social night in the Swan & Castle pub on Castle St., a block from the space. We'd love you to join us for a drink if you dare to brave the cold at this hour! <3 • What to bring • Important to know Hope long we stay depends on how many people come along at short notice. We'll be here til at least 10:45pm tonight though. Call[masked] if you want to confirm before coming down, or just turn up. ;)

  • Open Rights Group Oxford is BACK!
    • What we'll do Join us and our friends the Open Rights Group at Oxford Hackspace for a night of lively discussion about protecting human rights in the digital age. We'll be joined by ORG Campaigns Manager Mike Morel who will provide an overview of ORG's current and upcoming campaigns covering mass surveillance, digital privacy, data protection, free speech online, web blocking, automated censorship & more. But this meet up is also about YOU. Come tell the community about the digital rights issues most important to you and what you'd like to see ORG do about them. Absolutely no experience is necessary for this FREE event. All you need to bring is an interest in how technology affects society and personal freedom, and a desire to work for positive change. To read more about the activities of the Open Rights Group in Oxford, please see: https://www.meetup.com/ORG-Oxford/ • What to bring • Important to know Please try to arrive on time so as not to disrupt the speakers. • Microcontrollers & Digital Electronics Workshop #5
Update: The theme of this workshop will be microcontroller programming. ----------------------- Microcontrollers, or "uCs," are tiny computers that can be found everywhere in modern, daily life. Acting as tiny onboard "brains" inside devices, they can be found in household gadgets and appliances, in children's toys, in weather, sleep and exercise sensors, and in those new hire bikes that are suddenly all over the city. Small and versatile, UCs are cheap and very useful for building all sorts of projects and prototypes that need a bit of intelligence or reactivity inside them. In these sessions, we will learn to use uCs and digital logic, walk through some demonstration builds, and use Arduinos to create some projects and solve problems together. We have some boards that you can use, or you can bring down your own kit if you have it. Drop-in questions are also welcome, and bringing along your own projects is encouraged too. So, come along to these meets to get to grips with microcontrollers in a supportive and friendly environment, and explore what they - and you - are capable of building. Hope to see you there! x =========== * If you are also interested in analog and power electronics, please look in our Meetup calendar for Oxhack's Wednesday night events: "Analog & Power Electronics."

  • Textile Crafters Meetup #23
Do you sew, draft patterns, design clothing, quilt, spin wool, knit, crochet, felt, weave by hand or by loom, screenprint, work in vinyl, or otherwise manipulate fabrics and fibres? If so, you're invited to Oxhack's Textile Crafters gathering at our community sewing room. Now reclaimed from disuse and disrepair, the room is freshly painted with polkadots, filling up with sewing machines, irons, interesting tools and drafting dummies, and itching to be used by you. The room is open for use by the creators and textiles crafters of Oxford, so come along to meet the group, have some tea and chat, help build up the room's community of users, and share with us what sorts of facilities would be useful for you. All levels welcome! Especially invited are the "elder stateswomen" (and others) of sewing and textileswork, those who have decades of experience in these crafts. Your knowledge is highly prized here! The group currently has a number of members who are younger or newer to the craft, so if you or your mother, grandmother or older friend might enjoy helping to guide hands-on learning here, please do come along or leave us a comment! We intend to hold these meetups twice a month, when it's possible, namely on the FIRST SUNDAY and THIRD FRIDAY of every month. We will post here when each new date is confirmed though, so look out for the confirmations. Please come down and meet us, and we hope to see you soon!

  • Global Game Jam 2018
    • What we'll do Welcome to the 2018 Global Game Jam! The Global Game Jam® (GGJ) is the world's largest game jam event (game creation) taking place around the world at physical locations. Think of it as a hackathon focused on game development. It is the growth of an idea that in today’s heavily connected world, we could come together, be creative, share experiences and express ourselves in a multitude of ways using video games – it is very universal. The weekend stirs a global creative buzz in games, while at the same time exploring the process of development, be it programming, iterative design, narrative exploration or artistic expression. It is all condensed into a 48 hour development cycle. The GGJ encourages people with all kinds of backgrounds to participate and contribute to this global spread of game development and creativity. The structure of a GGJ jam is usually that everyone gathers on Friday late afternoon, watches a short video keynote with advice from leading game developers, and then a secret theme is announced. All sites worldwide are then challenged to make games based on that same theme, with games to be completed by Sunday afternoon. In January 2017, we had 700 locations in 95 countries create over 7000 games in one weekend! GGJ 2018 is happening on 26th-28th of January and one of the locations is the Oxford Hackspace! The jam is known for helping foster new friendships, increasing confidence and opportunities within the community. The jam is always an intellectual challenge. People are invited to explore new technology tools, try on new roles in development and test their skills to do something that requires them to design, develop, create, test and make a new game in the timespan of 48 hours. The GGJ stimulates collaboration and is not a competition. To find out more check out our location page on the main event website: https://globalgamejam.org/2018/jam-sites/oxford-hackspace There will be some snacks and drinks available at the event but you are welcome to bring food in. We do recommend you take a break for lunch. Day 1 – Friday 26th - Arrival ========================== •[masked]: Check in •[masked]: Announcements & Keynote •[masked]: Group Forming --Social "Get to Know Each Other" Exercises --Pitches --Group Forming Day 2 – Saturday 27th - Work ============================ •[masked]: Breakfast • 11:00 Deadline to create user profile and game page •[masked]: Lunch • 18:00-19:00: Playtesting each other's games •[masked]: Dinner Day 3 - Sunday 28th - Work ========================== •[masked]: Breakfast •[masked]: Lunch •[masked]: Deadline for handing in the games is 15.00 •[masked]: Presentations – Each team has 10 minutes to do a short presentation • What to bring Computers and a lot of creativity! Desktops are fine to bring as well! • Important to know The official sign-up for the event is at https://globalgamejam.org/2018/jam-sites/oxford-hackspace . While you are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible to give us an accurate idea of how many people are coming, you can also wait until the event starts.
