This is a rework of a walk we last did in 2010.....It takes in the local villages of Chalgrove, Newington & Stadhampton.
It goes through the historic site in Ascott Park once owned by the Dormers who made their fortune trading in wool and acquired the Ascott estate in 1518.
Ascott was raided by John Hampden in the Civil War. Soon after the Restoration William Dormer built “a verie noble” new house, but it burnt down before he could move in.
William's grandson John badly overstepped the mark. He terrorised his neighbours, killed a man in a duel and finally ran out of money. So although he landscaped the grounds and laid out the gardens he got no further with another new house than the groundworks.
Thereafter the estate went slowly downhill and the park became the farmland you see today. The gatepiers attracted Paul Nash to paint a picture called “Pillar and Moon” now held by the Tate Gallery. These have recently been restored by the County Council.
Note: RSVP's don't open until 6pm on 28th July.
We meet in the village Car Park which is found at the end of the road to the left and beyond The Crown Pub on the High Street and behind the village primary school with access to the playing field. There should be ample space.
There is NOT an accurate Postcode so please check this map link (https://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?msid=213360911161723457176.0004851370bb17dd52fac&msa=0&ll=51.666738,-1.080711&spn=0.002326,0.005681) and following directions.
We start the walk at 10AM sharp. (Please ensure you're at the start point at least 10 mins beforehand).
Walking grading: Moderate (Height gain 70m)
Dog friendliness: Mostly open countyside, some farmland with animals, a few minor roads
Estimated walk end time: 1:00PM
For lunch afterwards, we will be either walking across to the road to the Red Lion (http://www.redlionchalgrove.co.uk/) (probably very busy) or driving back down the road to The Lamb (http://www.thelambpubchalgrove.co.uk/) (note neither is likely to be particularly cheap).
If you would like to go to lunch, please reply to the "Reply below using the Reply button if you would like a place for lunch --------v" Post below.
If I don't see a request I will assume "No" for lunch.
We like to reduce the impact on the areas we visit and its sometimes difficult to find places with adequate parking, so we encourage lift shares with our regular drivers.
If you need a lift, please post below indicating that you'd like a lift and from which general part of Oxford and surrounding villages you would like to get picked up. There is sometimes a better chance of being picked up from one of the Park & Rides as people use the ring road en-route. There are some guidance notes on our message boards here (http://www.meetup.com/Oxford-Social-Walkers/messages/boards/thread/32009572).
Please ask for a lift ASAP even if your on the waiting list when you do so as the list is constantly changing.
We normally would welcome a donation of around £1 towards ongoing overhead costs associated with the Meetup service and ancillary costs, but during August & September we are NOT taking donations. :-)
For new members or walkers, please read the Walkers Guide (http://www.meetup.com/Oxford-Social-Walkers/messages/boards/thread/8819784) thread in the forum.
The number of the OSW group's mobile is 07772551496 for notification of delay or cancellation, or help with directions if lost. Details on use can be found on our message board. (http://www.meetup.com/Oxford-Social-Walkers/messages/boards/thread/9054076)
