Car Sharing

We like to promote car sharing for our walks and other events requiring travel outside Oxford. This guide sets out to help members to go about safely arranging a car share. Please note that information your share on an event page is freely available to ANYONE on the internet, not just members of the OSW Meetup Group.

  • Ask for a lift by posting on the event itself.
  • Do mention which area you coming from but don't specify exactly where you live.
  • Be flexible in where you can be picked up from. As an alternative, if you can make it to one of the Park & Ride Car Parks you stand a better chance of a lift from someone travelling enroute.
  • Do ask for a lift well ahead of an event, even if you are still on a waiting list. You are more likely to get a lift and a spot on an event if you have arranged a lift as others will drop out for the opposite reason.
  • Do try and arrange lifts using members who have been with a group a while, and not someone who may have just joined for your own safety. If in doubt, send a text to OSW Group mobile to request confirmation of the member offering a lift.
  • NEVER put you mobile number as part of a post on the event page, it can be seen by anyone.
  • Contact someone offering a lift by sending them an email (or a text if you've contacted them previously). To email another member, click on their profile picture on the event page to view their profile, and then look for the email option underneath their picture.
  • Do exchange mobile numbers via email with the lift giver, and give a brief description of yourself for them to look out for, and ask for the car colour to look out for.
*If for any reason you are not able to make the event, such as you are ill/overslept/no transport etc, the first update to do is change your RSVP status to "No", and please ensure you let the lift giver know ASAP and also at a sensible time of day (no one will thank you for a text at one in the morning! wink ). As a rule not between 23.00-08.00, thank you. You could also text the event organiser as they will usually have the group mobile phone number or will normally send an email 1-2 days in advance to all of the attendees with a contact telephone number.
*Please do not email the organiser personally/directly if there is less than 12 hours before the event to say you are cancelling as they are unlikely to have time to check their emails and may not have email access-as it says above please update your RSVP and text/call as appropriate.
  • Do offer money towards fuel costs. As a guideline, £2-5 is reasonable depending on length of journey. The driver will confirm how much they think is reasonable. Another guide to a contribution is the bus fare cost for a similar return journey. Some drivers don't always take money so please offer to buy them a drink in the pub instead if the opportunity arises.
