Inaugural VR Meetup in Oxford!

Hey everybody,

Great news - we have now secured an appropriate venue for our first ever Oxford's Virtual Reality Crowd event!

Please join us at 10:00 AM on Saturday October 22 in the Green Room inside Headington Hill Hall (Oxford Brookes University, off London Road).

We have the room booked for 3 hours until 1:00 pm, where there will be free Wifi access.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gnvQS2xhRg

If you have a VR headset, please bring it with you to share with those who have yet to experience the coming revolution! Please use the comment board to let us know if you'll be bringing yours and which device it is (just so we can get a sense of numbers).  For example, I'll be bringing my Samsung Gear VR with pre-downloaded VR experiences such as Six Flags roller coasters, a Chinese animated mini-film about emojis living inside somebody's smartphone and more.

As well, some of you VR developers have already reached out to me regarding doing demos of your latest game or film! Please e-mail me at [masked] to confirm if you will be coming that date, along with a description and trailer/image of the VR product you would like our members to try out that day. We can also arrange for guest access Wifi passwords through the university, but you would need to confirm your attendance with me via e-mail.

Members, if there are any specific VR related topics or themes you would like to see discussed during this event, please use the comment board below to provide your feedback. The organizational structure of this Meetup group is bottom-up, not top-down. You'll collectively shape the direction of what we do and explore together here, much more than myself or any of our leadership team (new Organizers will be joining us in the very near future!)

Last but not least, a very special thanks to our first Sponsor, John Twycross, Senior Lecturer in Digital Media Production in the Faculty of Technology, Design and Environment at Oxford Brookes University. John generously reached out to me, offering this venue free of charge so that we can convene as a community here in Oxford to work and play together in shaping the future of this nascent and exciting industry!

Great to have met you all at today's meetup.. we may have had a gate crasher (somebody's twin?) in our midst today photobombing the panoramic portrait ... http://in360degrees.co.uk/indie360/vrmeetup/ Have tagged everyone.. if I have got anyone wrongly tagged.. please let me know. The panoramic portrait is Gear VR and Cardboard compatible!

I look forward to the next meetup.

Sorry for not coming - woke up at 8.30am with a bad pain day, titrated medication till max dosage, still in too much pain to move. took meds to sleep as it doesn't hurt when asleep! Nathaniel this is exactly why I refused your offer about organization - I can't rely on myself to be able to do anything! Really, really, really wanted to be with you all. I hope I am there next month. BTW if any of you are free on Thursday Oxhack https://oxhack.org/ is having its Halloween Bash - which I hope to be at!

I believe so, but I am not sure as it's my first time here as well... Sorry, I know that's not too helpful!

Hope this wild act of speculation is OK here but at Oculus OC3 they mentioned work on a standalone head unit and Carmack talked about the sort of capabilities you get when you have the entire arm processor to one-self. Today Nvidia announced its powering the new Nintendo Switch console with a new Arm based custom Tegra. The problem with VR is scale, we are still having to use parts for other systems as VR doesn't have the scale to have dedicated hardware yet. However, if Oculus was to buy the Tegra that has been built for Nintendo for their standalone unit, they would get massive economies of scale, plus the ability to run off batteries. Just wild speculation...

IMPORTANT: If you are bringing a VR device, we need your full name and e-mail address to get a guest Wifi Account setup for you (free) through Oxford Brookes University. You must e-mail me at [masked] by 5 PM Thursday October 20 in order for us to get these credentials setup in time. Thanks! :)

Thanks for offering to bring your Rift, Danny! Does anyone have a compatible laptop they can bring and a VR experience they wish to demo on the Rift? Please respond by noon this Wednesday to confirm so we can make the necessary arrangements! Thanks :)

It's true that you need a pretty fast machine to get a nice VR experience that doesn't generate motion sickness quickly, but actually you can use much lower spec machines to just try stuff out. For example, my home machine has a GTX 660 and whilst it doesn't (obviously!) meet the Rift specs, it is good enough to develop with - at least to the level of prototyping/early development.

Btw - I'll also bring along a google cardboard.

    Hi Everyone,

I will be bringing my Homido and a plastic version of Google Cardboard (but have only one smartphone). I am basically a content creator and I have a fair amount of photographic content that I have created over 4 years from around Oxford and Oxfordshire that I would love to showcase (will be using Street View app on the phone+Plastic Cardboard so will need internet access).. You can see all the content here: http://oxfordshire.in360degrees.co.uk/

    Looking forward to the meeting.

I have a Rift headset (plus xbox controller plus the remote thingy, but no touch controllers) I can bring - but no laptop that is capable of running it. If somebody wants to demo/try something with it then I'm quite happy to make it available for the meetup - though obviously it's best to contact me first so I know, and you can get your laptop as prepared as possible. For example, if you have a game/application using Unreal/Unity/CryEngine etc and want to see if we can get it running in VR during the meeting, that would be fun (and perhaps possible!)

I have a DK2 but that's on loan to another Oxford Hackspace https://oxhack.org/ member I have 360 controller set up with a leap motion - but again I need to know my main portable VR rig is working!

Is there something worth buying for up to £30? £100?

    October 18

    • Big K.

apparently like xxxxbook the paragraph return is "new tech" hence missing reply(s) the key issue here is what sort of mobile are you using to display the image? If its Samsung you can pick up the new black SM-R323 on Ebay for about £80, the older white versions SM-R322 and SM-R321 are some what less and SM-R320 is note 4 only. If your using non-Samsung there is a bunch of adapters from China also on Ebay, I can bring mine along. Soon their will be a DayDream adapter from Google and soon all new phones will be daydream compatible.Other options is about £400 for Sony VR assuming you have a playstation 4 or PC solutions the cheapest high fidelity option is OSVR (open source VR) from Razer at £400

    • Big K.

Drat! Forgot to say of course there is Google Cardboard from various sources that is definitely in the sub £20 range but equally their are plastic viewers that do the same thing

This is a reminder that if you are attending this Meetup and are looking to demo your VR product/game/film here, please comment below at the latest by this Wednesday October 19 at noon so that I can let John know how many guest WiFi accounts we need for Saturday.

Let's discuss the many exciting possibilities that the emerging new world of VR offers in person at this Meetup :) We can also see which of our members are interested in attending the London Virtual Reality Business Meetup (held at WeWork's office) on November 22. Registration is free and I plan to attend: https://www.eventbrite...

I'd love if it were possible to have a VR experience with another person so we can interact in the same physical room and also in the same virtual room (or virtual forest, dream, whatever!)

    And VR scuba diving

And/or start a virtual flying project with y'all!

And a money-making VR shopping project.

In fact anything except a shoot 'em up. (Though being in a VR podrace would be fun!)

You seem to have listed 2 different locations. Please ignore the google maps location. The venue isThe Green Room Headington Hill Hall, Brookes Headington Hill Campus, off London Road.

Great, I will be there. Perhaps we could organize to also showcase Vive or Rift, but that may be a bit more difficult.
