Symfony2 on lv-php hack-vagrant

I did a fresh install of the group's vagrant virtual machine and then installed symfony2 via composer. I now get this error on the config file:

Change the permissions of the "app/cache/" directory so that the web server can write into it.
Change the permissions of the "app/logs/" directory so that the web server can write into it.

but no amount of chmod -R 777 (with or without sudo) will fix the problem. This is the ls -al of the app folder:

drwxr-xr-x 1 vagrant vagrant 136 Oct 7 05:29 cache
drwxr-xr-x 1 vagrant vagrant 102 Sep 27 08:11 logs

Any suggestions?
