Join us for a fun and educational afternoon!
Sunday April 12th 2:00-4:00pm
Do you wish to know more about studio light?
Are you curious about how it all works... what the difference is between strobes, camera flashes, continuous lighting (both hot and cold)? Then this is the perfect two hour introductory class for you.
PPG is very honored to be hosting a new event organizer - Ray Mata, owner of Blue Ridge Pictures (http://www.blueridgepics.com/)(on a personal note - he's also a really nice guy... so you will enjoy getting to know a local photographer willing to help you in your journey)
Ray will teach you how to use radio remote triggers with the lights, and the limitations of different kinds of lighting scenarios. He will show you how to set-up the lights, where to place them, and how to meter them for the correct exposure while working with a subject.
You may ask all the questions you want! After the explanation/ teaching part of this workshop, each of you will be sharing several of the remote triggers and capture images of the models to add to your own portfolios.
This type of class normally has an RSVP cost of $49 but as a warm welcome to Ray, as a new event organizer, we are offering it at a huge discount for the next week of only $25! But don't delay because RSVPs are limited to only 12 people.
Please RSVP here on the website but send payments to Ray directly through his PayPal address [masked]. If you don't have PayPal, simply contact Ray through his email to arrange another payment method.
P.S. All models are promised 2 or 3 images from each photographer in exchange for their time and for allowing you to use the images in your portfolio. You are asked to load your images to this Meetup site for the models to see. We allow 2 to 3 weeks to complete at least 2 or 3 images of each model.
P.S.S. - All levels of photographers are welcome and encouraged to join us! Even if you are just beginning - you don't have to go at it alone, there are professionals willing to help you, and guide you where else to learn and get more information.
Come join us for this fun 2 hour photography event in the urban downtown area of Asheville, NC
I will be arranging a few models for this workshop so there will be plenty of different subjects to work and practice with, and capture amazing portfolio images.
I will be teaching composition when working with a portrait subject, using urban structures, and proper lighting techniques. We will be working mostly with natural light, simply because that is the easiest place for new photographers to begin. However, if you like adding strobes to your session and wish to bring them along, you are always welcome to do so.
This workshop is for the beginner to the advanced. If you are very new and wish for some instruction, I will be teaching with one model at a time, to those of you who request this. For the more advanced members who join us, you may photograph and capture images of the other models.
You will learn:
how to scout for good locations for urban sessions which textures work well for backgrounds, and how to use them in your overall composition how to find great available light - I will have reflectors with me and demonstrate how to use them posing and client interaction techniques and some basic camera and photography skills, like metering, focus, and white balance
No experience is necessary to come to this event. You just need a camera and at least one lens. I would recommend something in the 50mm to 200mm range, fixed or zoom. However, you can use whatever you have and I can explain the limitations and work with you to still capture beautiful images.
I primarily work in all manual mode but it's OK if you usually keep your camera in one of the automatic modes. I will help you with your settings. We have a mix of beginners who don't know how to get out of automatic, to working professional photographers amongst us and everyone is always willing to help each other!
*Please note: You are REQUIRED to upload your images to this website within 2 weeks of an event. The models are allowed to ask you for 2 to 3 full resolution images for them to print from and the rest you may share digitally if like, and leave your watermark on. This is the exchange for the models time and for the model release that allows you to use them within your websites and portfolios. However, the release is not signed for you to sell them to 3rd party sites. If you sell to stock photography sites, you will need to bring your own release and ask the model before shooting if he/ she is willing to allow you to do so.
I am really excited about this event. It's been awhile since I've been to Asheville and I scouted this location last time we were there visiting. I can't wait to get back with a few models to photograph there.
I hope you will come out and join us!

Come join us for a fun morning, capturing beautiful fall portraits.
We will have a couple models, a beautiful background of fall colors and a pristine lake.
However.... The best part about this event is to meet and work along side, Master Photographer, Marilyn Sholin.
(quick capture above of the area by Marilyn)
This is a rare opportunity to not only capture amazing images for your portfolio but to learn from one of our industry leaders for a couple of hours.
If you have not yet had the pleasure to learn from Marilyn, this is an excellent chance to get a sneak peak of what a wonderfully talented and sharing lady she is.
She has extended this offer to a small group of my members to join her on this mini fall outing to photograph the models and the scene.
She is conducting a workshop next weekend and this is only a small piece of it.
Marilyn does have a few open spots for that workshop. If you are interested, please contact her directly for that: [masked]
This event is happening just south of Asheville in Fletcher, NC.
We will have a couple extra models added to her event, so plenty of shooting time as well.
The cost is only $20.
I hope to see you there and feel free to email me if you have any questions.
- Lori Jill
This is $15 for paid PPG members/ and $30 for non-members Please become a member at www.portraitphotographygroup.com to receive half off this meetup Membership starts at just under $15 for 1 month, 3 months - $30, or 1 year - $100. As a paid member, you may attend any of our events, in any of our cities, at the discounted rates.
I have organized another desination model shoot-out for our Charlotte PPG group, and realized that it is so close to Asheville that I should post the event in the Asheville Meetup group too. Sorry for the late announcement on this but if you are free today and would like to come out and photograph our models with us this evening, we have plenty of RSVP space. There is about 10 of us plus 4 models (and family of 4 is also coming to model) I will be deomonstrating some family posing ideas with them.
If you've not been to Lake Lure/ Chimney Rock area, this will be a great time for you to discover an awesome new place to photograph that is only a short drive from Asheville.
I am scheduling models for an eveing shoot in the Mountain stream that will begin around 6:00. We will meet first by the pool at this little grill and grab a bite to eat. This will enable evryone to find us and meet before driving a short distance to photograph. The last destination we did I found it difficult to get everybody to the same location and feel this will be much easier. So, you do not have to come at 4:30 but if you wish to be able to find us for the shoot, I'd suggest meeting us there before 6:00pm. We will be leaving the Grill at 6:00 to shoot for a couple hours. This location is gorgeous and the water and rocks will allow the models and photographers to keep cool also
The lighting is usually really great at this hour too. If you like to work with an external lighting, please feel free to bring it. As always, I will have reflectors and scrims, and am more than happy to demonstrate or teach anyone who asks how to use them.
Our "shoot-outs" are not meant to be as much of a class or teaching environment, as they are an opportunity for you to practice your portrait photography skills in a relaxed environment. I believe there is still a lot of learning that takes place at these events, not to mention, great new images to add to your portfolio.
If you have not had a chance to join our group yet at any of the shoots with models, these "shoot-out" events are a perfect 1st time event to attend. They are always a lot of fun and everyone works well with each other to collaborate and create great portraits. There is usually several more experienced photographers who are always willing to help you if you feel you need it.
This event is limited right now in RSVPs to only 20 of us to be sure the model to photographer ratio is good.
The agreement to the models is that each photographer will share one or two images with each model that you photograph. This is in exchange for their time. You may use all the images that you capture in your portfolios.
This Saturday I have several models lined up to pose at Kings Mt State Park for an all day fun filled photography event. Feel free to join us all day, or choose to come out for any part of the day.
I have tried to post a few things in Asheville with little success in sign-ups so I am hoping that by posting this event in a location that is easy to get to from Asheville that some of you may come out and join some of our members from the other PPG cities. This event is being posted in 5 of our Meetup groups.
$60 for non- members/ $30 for members
Join us at www.portraitphotographygroup.com (http://www.portraitphotographygroup.com/) to become a member and save now, membership starts at just $15/ month.
The variety of shooting opportunities on this day will be similar to our weekend "get-aways" but rather all in one day, right here, close to home. We will begin early around 9:00am and photograph models all day long until the sun goes down. This part of the park closes at 9:00pm so that will be as late as we can stay.
We plan this to be just a casual hang-out of friends where we can have some fun creating together and "talking" shop. Many models will be provided for you to work with. If I see a lot of RSVPs I will continue to add more models to be sure we all get plenty of shooting and practice time. We will have women, men, couples, maybe a family, children, and a maternity. Some are more experienced models and others are new for you to practice posing with. All will be dressed for portfolio worthy images.
If you just wish to practice with your own equipment or possibly get some help with your equipment, this will be an excellent opportunity for that. There will not necessarily be a lot of instruction although when working with different models and a variety of photographers we often learn a lot from one another.
I've been to this locationseveral times and have wanted to plan something with models around the old dam and large brick walls for awhile now. You will not be disappointed with the location and back drops. There is a large lake area right there where we will rent a canoe and have models on the water as well. Planning for a "romance on the water" shoot with a couple, the canoe, and maybe a parasol.
I also have a couple girls lined up to do a Rock the dress session in the evening time.
I will be bringing some external lighting and props but am encouraging everyone to bring what they normally use in order to practice.
You should also bring lawn chairs, blankets, and coolers with your own lunch and/ or dinner and drinks. There are picnic tables in this area and I will bring a couple of my fold out tables, but we will all be more comfortable for the day if you bring these other items as well. There are lots of grilling areas if you wish to do that as well. This area is shaded and some parts fall into a pretty deep shade so we should be able to photograph all day long.
There is a public restroom very close and a nice children's park too, if you wish to bring the whole family out for a day with us. Please just comment the number of people who will be coming with you so we will know what to expect. No need to pay for anyone other than the person who will be photographing.
The easiest way to get to the park off of I85 and it's just a few minutes outside of Kings Mountain (the city). The park entrance, which is off of hwy 161 is approxiametly 35 miles south from the interchange of I485 and I85. Or you could possibly drive in through Shelby also. When you turn into the park, you will drive one mile in and turn right into the camp ground. There is a place there to pay $2 for entrance into the park. You will then drive down that curving little road a bit over a mile until you see the water on your left and park in the parking lot at the top of that hill. We will be meeting in the grassy area above where the canoes are at on the lake.
This will be a fun day! I hope many of you will join us. If you have questions about pricing, marketing, or just photography in general, please bring them and we will have all day if you like to "talk shop".
See you then.....

Everyone has been asking what and when the spring trip is going to be this year?
So here's the announcement! We have organized another great get-away weekend for the group.
The first year we did this we gathered 12 photographers from just our Charlotte group and went to Hilton Head Island (see the first 2 images below)
Then last year, we took almost 40 to Santee, SC from 3 of our groups (see the last image below)
This year we have organized a trip to Charleston, SC complete with a variety of modeling sessions and social activities that will make this a fun and unforgettable time.... and, we are inviting everyone from all of our PPG cities!
The cost of the two days of organized sessions with models and activities is only $250!
This trip is a great deal, since all the hotels in the area are running around $180 and up that weekend each night, however, it is obviously a very limited event and I need to know the RSVP for this within the next 4 days so I can lock in the house (or houses) and number of guests. Please don't delay in saving your spot.
This DOES include the two nights stay in a house near the beach, and your own room. We will have the house both Saturday and Sunday night, but not Friday. If you decide to arrive early please arrange a hotel now, as I have found most things are already booking out for that Friday night. If you wish to bring a spouse please state that in the comments but no extra money is needed since the $250 is for your own room, with either a double or queen bed. If you plan to take up an entire room, whether with a spouse or just wish for the privacy, then you can RSVP as normal under this event. However, if you are willing to share a room, then you can pay the adjusted rate of only $125, and you simply just need to change the price when RSVPing.
This is an amazing deal for a two night beach house stay and photo sessions.
Also, if you'd rather choose your own lodging while there, you may simply join us for only the weekend activities for just $59. This is still two days of photographic fun, but does NOT include the cost of over night accomidations. If you wish to do this, please RSVP on the seperate Meetup event for this weekend that you will also see listed.
I also have a few hotel's information that I am happy to forward to anyone who requests them in the area.
This is obviously on a first come, first serve basis, since sleeping space in the house/ houses will be limited. However, we do plan to have events at the house where everyone will be able to gather no matter where you are staying. Please join the waiting list if this event should fill. If we see the waiting list is big enough, we will put together (hopefully) another house to share in the same area. We would absolutely love to see a big group again but it is hard for us to reserve the houses until we have some idea of interest in this trip.
If you've joined us before, I hope that you will come again this year, if you are new to our group or have yet to be able to join us, please feel free to check out the past Meetup links and the pictures attached to see how much fun we have when we all get together for a couple days.
We are a very warm and welcoming group and all photographic skill levels are invited to come out and join us! As always you will not only walk away with more photography knowledge, and great new images to add to your portfolios, but also fun memories with friends.
Oh... and did I mention.... we have awesome models ready to pose for us all weekend.
We have arranged for girls on the beach in both bathing suits and formal wear. We also have a couple to pose as a bride and groom, kids, and a family.
We also have a surprise master photography mentor ready to join us at the beach if the attendance is high enough.
