There is an unpaved parking and launch area just east of the bridge on the south side of Harkney Hill Road (Route 118), Coventry, RI. From I-95, take exit 6 (NOT 6A), Go north on Route 3 for 1 mile, go left on Harkney Hill Rd for 1.2 miles. Access is on the right. This address, 472 Harkney Hill Rd, Coventry, RI, will get you close to the launch site.
Big River is 6.8 miles long, formed in West Greenwich by the confluence of the Congdon and Nooseneck rivers. From there, it flows due north through West Greenwich and Coventry to its confluence with the Flat River, in the area now flooded by the Flat River Reservoir, to form the South Branch Pawtuxet River.
Required equipment: PFD, 10-foot length of rope, whistle, headlamp/flashlight (for evening paddles). And be prepared to give your emergency contact number to the host if he or she asks for it.
