GROKFEAST 2013

We're filming at the farm tour and have gotten permission from the farmer to have a short picnic during the 1st part on The Ranch. We basically just need to film some sort of "feast" that includes at least 8 people. This works out perfectly then since its hard coordinating to meet on such short notice to have a potluck and to leave time for our camera guys to put together the video by the deadline of Oct 1.

If you're going to the farm tour and want to be part of the video, please bring something to eat, it can be a snack or anything to share with the others. You can bring a picnic blanket, or we can just sit on the grass. If you have a "Paleo Chicago" shirt, wear that (Matt posted the links to the shirts in the comments section). If you have any suggestions/comments, feel free to post!

Whoever will be at the farm tour and wants to be in the video: please bring some food to share with other in this mini-potluck-picnic! I'm bringing cookies and banana bread; Anthony I'm expecting fruit bars!! Post on here what you're bringing, and ill try to think of other good snack-like foods that would be good for people to bring to this!

Please make sure to film yourself prepping the food for the event. Maybe 30 seconds to a minute of you preparing whatever you're going to bring will be enough. iPhone/Android video is perfect, just be sure it's horizontal - it's easy to forget with the phone typically being vertical, but very important :) -, but specifically we'll want footage of you preparing the food, smiling, laughing, pissed off, whatever. Just so we can see you and a little of what you're doing. It can be as simple as propping the phone up to shoot you dumping dressing on a salad or whatever it is that you're doing. Nothing fancy, but we'd like to see if we could integrate at least a few people prepping their dish.

      Me: banana bread and meatballs
      My sister: kale chips
David K: Paleo avocado pudding (maybe?)
      Anthony: sandwiches and cookies
Bryan B: paleo panna cotta (I think)

      Add on to the list!

There's a spring lake nature preserve right near the farm that we can go to after the tour to film anything else like slack lining, frisbee tossing, and/or wheelbarrow racing!

I reached out to Cliff, farmer of Barrington Natural Farms, let him know of what we're trying to do with this video, and I asked if there was any chance of being able to have a picnic there, whether it be before the tour, during, or after just for more ease of filming since we're already there with many members of the group. I'm waiting for his response and will relay his message as soon as I get it!

I get a meat CSA (all local, pastured, grass fed stuff) from C + D family farms. I'd be happy to give them a call to see if they'd be interested in driving over with some of their stuff to sell or to talk about their farm. Let me know.

Bryan, that sounds like a great idea for its own separate event. Barrington natural farms (where we're going) sells local natural products / grass fed meat as well, so to actually bring a competitor to his farm doesn't sound like a good idea. But definitely reach out; and if this company is willing to do that, we can set something up to have everyone involved.

I live in Hyde Park, Chicago, and can offer my place for the event, if it's not too far from everyone. There are two really beautiful parks in the neighborhood that would be perfect for the picnic.

On the bright side, a spot has opened up for someone else now. Have a WONDERFUL time. Will miss being there but am looking forward to the video entry on MDA. I have no doubt, it will be EXCEPTIONAL!!! :-)

We have some great ideas out there. Time is of the essence and we're approaching the weekend at what feels like warp speed, (Thank you very much Mark Sisson for lighting our fire ;-)). Let's make an effort to firm up our plan ASAP. Day? Time? Location? and What is everyone bringing to Grokfeast? I'll start... the only time I can NOT make it is Sunday during the farm tour. My home remains open to host any of the days if necessary. In honor of the season, I will make and bring an apple/apricot compote. The recipe is from the book authored by Chef Rachel Albert. She has done cooking demos at Mark's Primal Cons in CA for the past 3 years. (I was her assistant while attending nutrition class in Arizona for 2 years and we are now long distance friends :-)) http://www.thehealthycookingcoach.com

OK so we have some very specific ideas, and I'll get an email out in a few minutes to the core group that was decided at the planning meeting, but we're thinking Saturday would be better so we can film during the daylight and in the sun. We can host at our house so we can use the park down the street to set up our slackline, do some yoga, throw the football on the football field and set up the feast on our big table in our backyard. Is everyone available for Saturday?

sorry, no advance warning, no Kira..... :-(

I can make my home available at 5pm on Sunday the 22nd if you need a place for our tribe to gather.

    September 17, 2013

    • Lynette C.

Yeah!!!!! That's what I was thinking :-) Anthony and I wanted to reach out to you after work this evening. That would be perfect, we'd just also need to commit to bringing food for actual "feast" part - bring it with to the farm tour for afterwards

I'm afraid timing is not my friend this year. I'm leaving town on Monday (9/23) and returning the following Monday (9/30). It will be a bit of a crunch for me, BUT if we can get a pot luck together by this Friday or Saturday, I'd be willing to host (in Buffalo Grove).
As a note of interest, there's a hiking trail a short distance outside my back door which leads to a tunnel (very cavelike) that goes under Arlington Heights Rd. Wide open space on the other side for Grok activities.
