Enjoy an "active" Potluck in the Burbs!

  • Sep 23, 2012 · 12:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Lets gather at my house for potluck and playtime. We can feast at my house and play in the back yard or picnic and play at a local forest preserve that is 5 minutes away. We can decide at the last minute depending on the weather. The date can depend on majority vote. Either Saturday Sept. 22 or Sunday Sept. 23 or 30th. As for time, I'm thinking noonish so we have plenty of daylight hours. Additional comments, suggestions, questions?

As I prepare for Sunday, a few thoughts come to mind...

Transportation - I've lost track of drivers and riders from the city. Just a reminder for those who need transportation, my home is less than two miles away from the Libertyville train station. I'd be happy to come pick you up if necessary. My car seats 5 total. (You'd be taking the Metra Milwaukee district north line. Chicago-Fox Lake) The train runs every 2 hours on Sunday. It's not a problem if you arrive early or leave late.

Food - I think we're good with meat and veggies. If you're not sure what to bring, may I suggest an appetizer or dessert. Kale chips or fresh veggies for dipping into guacamole would be great snacks for watching football - hint hint ;-)

Beverages - I'll make a large container of (unsweetened) fresh brewed green iced tea. I'll also have tea and mocha teeccino on hand for hot drinks. No dairy in the house but I do have coconut milk if you like to lighten things up.

Supplies - I have plenty of paper products and utensils from previous parties. It will be an eclectic assortment to meet our needs.

Planning - Anyone is welcome to arrive earlier on Sunday to help plan/volunteer for the Grokfest entry. The official party time is 12-4 but nothing is etched in stone. See you all soon :-)

It's here all! We are the first Grokfreast to be posted on MDA! Is this a good sign perhaps? http://www.marksdailyapple.com/grokfeast-in-illinois-2/

I am now going to be drafting up the post and publishing it super soon!

OK, things to bring... 1. Dancing Shoes 2. Board game and 3. Food to share. Should we create a separate event for this so others can see?

      October 2, 2012

    • Matt

Cathy -- I put an event shell out there for the 15th. We can fill in the details as we go.

Eggs can be a hard thing to master. If you can hard boil an egg maybe try for deviled eggs. Or do paleo mayo. I would totally swap for paleo mayo, when I make it it's such big batches I can't use it before it goes bad.

Mandy, I really like the idea of the swap including a condiment/sauce swap since it's mostly totally benign fat and spices which is easier for us paleo+autoimmune folks w/extra guidelines.

      September 28, 2012

  • Mandy

I love the idea of a lard party! I also make fermented foods so I could contribute to that part. May I also suggest a food swap? Exchanging foods you're good at for those you aren't would be a fun way to bring some variety to your pantry and get new recipes.

  • Todd D.

If you have a Primal related reading book or cookbook then please bring it!! This will only add to our awesomeness. I went to a potluck in Grand Rapids in August with 14 of us and we had a table of a variety of books. It was kick ass to say the least.

    I'm bringing Practical Paleo!

    September 22, 2012

Good idea! I'll bring Mark's quick and easy meals.

      September 22, 2012

Good thinking Todd - I have quite a few to display. I'll set up a table for books. Remember to write your names in any books you bring in case there are duplicate copies. Also, may I suggest bringing the recipe of the dish you're bringing to share with others and perhaps use for the Grokfest entry.

    Hi All,

Well, this event is just getting better by the minute (outside of the fact that Todd is not able to join us.)

Mandy emailed me about her connection to the farmer she's buys her meat from. His name is Brian Fehr of Fehr Farms. He expressed interest in networking with our group. She mentioned that it was a private affair, but would ask if it was ok that he join us for the afternoon. He offered to bring some steaks and other meats to grill. She said he seems really cool and down to earth, and offers some great product. He may be willing to give people in our group a discount on bulk orders too. He's not the pushy salesperson type, so it's not likely that he would put a damper on the fun. Are you all ok with having him join us on Sunday? My vote is a very big YES. PS If he comes and brings meat, I'll change my dish from pork tenderloin to a big green salad full of organic veggies from my CSA package with home made balsamic vinegar dressing.

Hi everyone--sorry for my delayed response about rides. The person who was supposed to cover my shift at work is no longer with us, so I had to see if I could find a replacement, which I did! woo! I am coming again now. I just booked my train ticket from Grand Rapids! I need a ride as well from the city as I was counting on Dan too. Kelley - Are you near Wrigleyville? September 20, 2012

  • Shannon

Big yes to the meat guy from me. Not sure what to bring I was waiting to see where the final holes were. Anyone interested in raw milk? I could bring some if that.

    September 20, 2012

  • Todd D.

I can no longer make this. I'm extremely pissed. I am allergic to the cold it turns out. It's so bad that even after a few sips of a cool smoothie my throat is swelling up a bit. With the temps in the 50s and clouds and rain, it would be stupid for me to take the train into Chicago.

And if you look at the forecast you will notice a high of 70 on Tuesday and 78 on Wednesday with 100% sunny skies!

I'm hopefully getting an epipen today which may save my life someday.

I'm headed somewhere warm but my spirit will be with the crew on Sunday. I'll offer any help if needed (I'm emailing Cathy about this).

What kind of food is everyone bringing? Rob and I were thinking of bringing a box of steaks, which we would then marinate for the party. I'm assuming a grill or some other kind of fire will be available (please correct me if I'm wrong, Cathy!). Is everyone cool with that?

    September 16, 2012

    • Todd D.

It sounds like we are going to have an absurd amount of food! I am debating between the following...

      1. Chicken liver pate (it's out of this world on cheese and good with celery or carrots)
      2. Chocolate covered bacon
      3. Bacon wrapped pecan dates and pineapple

      September 18, 2012

    • A former member
      A former member

My vote is for 1. The Chicken liver pate. After going through everyone's list, I see that pork is the primary protein and unfortunately, my guest cannot have pork :( I may have to bring some fish to balance things out!

I say we "wing" this Grokfeast deal. Isn't that what Grok would kind of do? Live in the moment and just let it happen? We can "plan" once we are all there.

I say we just play games including Marks favorite Ultimate, maybe create some educational game once we are there, watch the Lions and Bears a bit and maybe even play some football, enjoy awesome food, dance and sing (karaoke anyone?), etc.

What do you all think? I think photos with our iPhones will be just fine. It's all about being creative and having a blast - photo quality won't make a difference!

We should play tag and follow the leader...

    September 15, 2012

    • Todd D.

Shannon - Did you steal this from me in the MDA forum? Lol. I started the thread there that has nearly 100 pages of folks finishing that sentence! I think it's a great idea! We should put together a couple reports with our tips, tricks, questions, etc. I'd be more than willing to spend Monday putting this together!
