See the Raven, Be the Raven: Fiery Gizzard to Raven Point

  • Jan 26, 2014 · 7:30 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Winter time is a great time to enjoy the scenic Fiery Gizzard (Map of Fiery Gizzard).

MEETUP Time @ 1st CARPOOL LOCATION 7:30 am (CT): Steak N Shake parking lot in Antioch, off I-24 Bell Road Exit #59.

MEETUP Time @ 2nd CARPOOL LOCATION 8:05 am (CT): Cracker Barrel parking lot in Murfreesboro, off I-24 Exit #81B.

HIKE DISTANCE : Fiery Gizzard: 9 miles.
DIFFICULTY RATING : Strenuous hike, due to uphill climbs and distance.  Some brief off-trail detours.

DRIVE TIME: ~1 HR one way from the 2nd carpool to Tracy City.  Should be at the Grundy Forest State Park trail head between 9:15 and 9:30am  (CT).

ACTIVITY TIME : Approximately 6.0 hours on the trail.

DIRECTIONS: To Grundy Forest State Park. GPS [masked],[masked]

COST: $1 donation to the Organizer to help pay the Meetup fees for our site.

Fiery Gizzard is one of the most beautiful areas in the South Cumberland State Park area.  Perhaps we will see long icicles or frozen whirlpools?

Agenda calls for taking the rocky path UP to Raven Point and the eastern ridgeline DOWN.  If you have never done this trail before, be aware that the rocks "move" in the boulder field.  Caution should be exercised and proper hiking footwear should be worn to avoid twisted ankles, jammed knees and a generally scraped up body. The overlook at Raven Point is worth the effort.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Please offer your carpool driver gas money; no less than $15 should be offered.  Gas prices are $3.15/gal as of this writing.

My estimation is total activity time of hike activity time of 6 hours.  There is an area near the parking to change clothes.

Please RSVP with integrity.  If you've signed up, then learn you cannot attend, please change your RSVP to "No, Can't Go".

The Fiery Gizzard trip to Raven Point is one of the most popular treks for Central Tennessee Meetup groups...and this one was made even better by the uncommon icy scenery and great P.A.T. hikers. Great thanks to all those who attended. See ya on the next event!

Sorry to hear this, Tammy....let me know if you need a discount to buy a new Nissan.

      1 · January 26, 2014

    • Tammy

Thanks Patrick, but it looks like Nissan is covering all expenses, including a vehicle to drive while being repaired, so I'm going to keep my toaster for a while :-)

I plan on being at Antioch location at 7 so I can tank up on I Hop pancakes before the hike. :-)

    January 25, 2014

    • Janice

Scrambled eggs, bacon, hashbrowns, 3 pancakes and 2 cups of coffee. Hiking days are my cheat days. "I'm good at cheating" :-)

Wow. That's a ton of calories---but that's the idea. I cannot see you at a molecular level, but again, your performance on the trail, on the runs, indicates you are in a good rhythm of energy and calories. Kudos!

I hear someone isn't surprised if I back out tomorrow! I was excited about hiking but my oldest is flying in tomorrow morning and I need to stay home and visit with him.

I would like to carpool with someone at the Antioch location please! I will offer gas!

    January 24, 2014

    • Patrick

@Amy...I guarantee that we will have someone you can carpool with, in Antioch. Will this gas that you offer be in a closed container? ;)

      3 · January 24, 2014

    • Amy G.

Yes I will wrap it in a bow!

      1 · January 24, 2014

  • darlene

I have a van that sits 8 additional people. I will be at the Antioch location

    January 24, 2014

    • Patrick

@Darlene....wow, a van for 9! I usually drive, but maybe your vehicle will hold us all. We will have to wait and see if that many hikers show up at Steak N Shake.

      1 · January 24, 2014

I will meet at trail head instead of Murfreesboro.

    January 24, 2014

Great news! Two hike leaders have stepped forward for Sunday. We will have two hiking options. Each one will begin at the same trailhead, but move in opposite directions. Team Jessica/Kerry will lead & sweep Option 2. Team Patrick will take the original Option. Be thinking about which group is good for you, or if it even matters to you which group you trek with. I say up front that I will lead the more strenuous of the 2 options but...., Jessica and Kerry are just as capable of leading unpredictable-yet-safe trips through the wilderness too.

    January 23, 2014

    • Michael (Mike) H.

Actually you are leading the safer option (all though a little more strenuous). Doing the rock field earlier in the hike is much safer than after!

      2 · January 23, 2014

  • Patrick

Because we have so many on the Wait List, I’ll offer a unique alternative.
My plan is to hike by Rockhouse, along Little Fiery Gizzard Crk & continue along Big Fiery Gizzard Crk, to Raven Pt via the uphill boulder route. Return trip along the eastern ridge, descend back to Dog Hole junction, visit Sycamore Falls before returning to little Creek.
If I have a volunteer to lead half (or approx. half) of the group in the OPPOSITE direction (ascend Dog Hole mine & descend the boulder field route after Raven Pt), then we can include more hikers. We may or may not be timed up to meet for lunchat Raven Pt. Ideally, the other group probably needs a 'sweep' too. Volunteer would preferably have some experience with the trail, but not absolutely necessary. Note the Patrick Option may include brief walks off the trail, maybe a short interlude up a gorge, a chance to get your feet wet---that sort of action. I expect more miles on the Patrick Option. :-) So, do I have a volunteer?

    1 · January 23, 2014

    • Patrick

@Jessica...yes, upgrading hikers from the Wait list is the idea. OK---you're hired.

      January 23, 2014

    • Patrick

@Kerry...thank you. You are also hired. :)

      January 23, 2014

Early weather forecast for Sunday: Sunny, high of 48, lows in the 20s. 0 chance of precipitation.

Why is attendance limited to 15? Can I tag along anyways? I drive a Prius, so I don't need any gas money :-)

    January 18, 2014

    • Michael P.

I average 42 mpg, so $5000 would take me about 70,000 miles

      January 19, 2014

    • Patrick

Sounds right on pace from what I've seen from the Prius.
