What we're about

International folk dancing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbjj_kIwMlE&feature=youtu.be) is great exercise and a wonderful way to make friends. There are folk dance groups all over the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia and they often dance many of the same dances we dance. Once you learn the basics of folk dancing, it's a skill you can take with you all wherever you go!

The Pasadena Folk Dance Co-op welcomes you to learn fun dances like these (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WafWrEqgfNE&feature=youtu.be) from around the world. We dance recreationally in casual clothes and have a lot of fun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Me93VPZihE). Sometimes we perform (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrSYPB6Bbgo&feature=youtu.be) or have festivals (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kaqk0PM0tPo) where some of us wear costumes. Sometimes we do zany things like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VnGvxEpmwg&feature=em-upload_owner) combination dance/water fight. Click here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuveCSCJmjc) to see our dragon dance.

No partner, special clothing, or multi-week commitment is needed. Just show up any Friday in casual cloths and comfortable shoes. People of all ages and dance ability will enjoy dancing with us. Our group has about 30 people dancing most nights. The majority of our members are middle aged or beyond, but we have some younger members too. Folk dancers outside Southern California tend to be younger. Dancers
occasionally bring their children. Many of our members are single, but we also have a number of couples. (Most couples dance with other people as well.) Some of our dancers have danced professionally and others had never danced before they joined us.

Some international folk dances are easy, but you will need to attend some introductory classes to get started. We have three different classes available for you to choose from. Each is at a different location near or in the San Gabriel Valley. There is a class for seniors (over 50) in Pasadena on Monday afternoons, another class on Thursday nights in La Canada, and our large class (and main group) on Friday nights in Sierra Madre. Different teachers teach the different classes.

Most of our dances are easy to learn, but we have a few that are quite vigorous and/or complicated, but well worth the effort. Dancers feel free to sit down and socialize when a dance is too difficult for them. No one will pressure you into doing a dance that seems too difficult for you, but we provide lots of help and encouragement. Some of the music we dance to is so beautiful that it will take you breath away! Our members have formed many long-term friendships and, over the years, we have become a community. We dance every Friday at the Old North Church, 191 West Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre. Lessons begin promptly at 7:30 pm and continue until 8:30 pm, followed by refreshments and more dancing until 10:30 pm. We would appreciate it if you RSVP. Many of our regular members are not members of Meetup. We usually have over 30 people dance with us , even though the RSVPs on this site may say fewer. If you would like to have a taste of international folk dancing to see if you like it, we highly recommend you join us at 7:30 pm on a Friday night for about 30 minutes of introductory teaching. We know it is difficult to walk into a room full of strangers, so our group makes a real effort to help people new to folk dancing feel welcome and comfortable. In this main, Friday night group, we generally teach the same dances all month long, recognizing that it can take a while for the dances to sink in. The majority of our members in Pasadena are middle aged or beyond, but we have some younger members too. If you travel to areas beyond Southern California, you will find many people in their twenties and thirties folk dancing. In our group in Pasadena, people occasionally bring their children. Many of our members are single, but we also have a number of couples. (Most couples dance with other people as well.)
