Hey all,

I picked up Madness at Gardmore Abbey and it looks pretty fun. Explore the ruins of Gardmore Abbey and discover the fabled cards of the Deck of Many Things!

So I'm looking for adventurers who want to go through the ruins on Monday nights at 6 p.m. at Game Empire Pasadena.

If you're interested, let me know by replying here or sending me a message. You'll need a level 6 character to start [one caveat: no themes], and it will be semi-casual -- players will be part of an adventuring guild so if you can't commit to every night, you can play on a drop-in basis.

Why no themes? I'm going to use custom themes tailored to the setting, a la Neverwinter. I think it will help draw the characters into the story better.

Update: Here's the list of themes for this campaign. Choose one! I'll bring copies of this document with me for player reference.

I might give this a try. I've got a few character ideas I've been tinkering with that might work nicely hear. If we get a few more people signed on I'd be interested in seeing what they're going for so I can plan accordingly.

I'm going to bring a few pregens for indecisive people or folks who just drop in to play, if that helps.

SPOILERS for Madness in Gardmore Abbey

Session one got off to a good start with these characters:

  • Ashar, a storm genasi artificer/wizard who had crossed paths with one of the cards from the Deck of Many Things (Wild Card theme)
  • Harbeck, a dwarf warpriest of Moradin and Guild Organizer who had found the "Balance" card from the Deck
  • Corporal Gren, a dwarf fighter who is a Winterhaven Regular now on special assignment

They were hired by Lord Padraig of Winterhaven to investigate the orcs who were seen near Gardmore Abbey and report back to him after scouting out the area. They also met Sir Oakley, an aging paladin of Bahamut who seeks to do a cleansing ritual on the temple itself.

The characters formed a guild called Cardmore Grabby and set off to the ruins of Gardmore Abbey, accompanied by Sir Oakley. He recalled there was a hidden staircase at the back which would take them to Dragon's Roost, the top of the hill on which the abbey sits, bypassing the orc-infested village and the mysterious woods.

The party explored one building, finding it infested with spiders which they dispatched with ease. Descending a staircase, they opened a pair of ornate double doors and came upon a room filled with kobolds and a sleeping dragon on a pile of treasure. Unprepared for a fight with a dragon, they retreated and closed the doors, returning to the top of the hill.

In the main temple, they encountered a pair of crazed harpies and three celestial angels, all of whom attacked them. After a difficult fight the party emerged victorious, and also found a magic weapon claimed by Gren. (Level 9 or 10 rare weapon.)

They then assisted Sir Oakley with a difficult ritual, which ultimately failed at the end because he needed three relics from the original temple, which must be somewhere on the grounds of Gardmore Abbey: the Braizer of Silver File, the Bowl of Io's Blood, and the Chalice of the Dragon. If these are found, the ritual can be reattempted with ease (the skill challenge need not be repeated).

Experience:
312 - spider fight
364 - harpies & angel fight
500 - skill challenge
83 - minor quest "Escort Sir Oakley to the Temple"
175 - major quest (partial award) "Purify the Temple"
===
1434 total per character

Open Quests:

  • Major Quest "Scout the Abbey"
  • Major Quest "Gather the Sacred Vessels"
  • Major Quest (partial) "Purify the Temple"
