The purpose of the Patuxent River Triathlon Club (PRTC) is to provide a no-pressure and fun educational basis for learning about and training for triathlons. It is also intended to provide for a laid-back social atmosphere for like-minded triathletes of all experience levels to interact, train with, and learn from. PRTC welcomes ALL, from those wanting to do their first triathlon to the seasoned age-grouper triathlon with a decorated trophy case.
PRTC strives to offer many "meetup" opportunities for club members such as training events (swimming, biking, running, bricks), formal events (our annual Kid's Triathlon), and club meetings and social activities. We encourage all of our members to assist our Board of Director (BoD) members in setting-up and hosting club meetups in order to maximize the number of opportunities that are made available to our club members.
The Club charges individual members dues primarily to register the Club with the United States of America Triathlon (USAT) governing body. The Club's Individual member's dues is $35. Dues are collected at the time of membership approval for new members and at the beginning of each calendar year for existing members wishing to renew their membership with our meetup. The Club also offers family memberships for $50 and one-day memberships for $10 for individuals who would like to participate in a club-sponsored sporting activity.
All USAT-affiliated clubs must also pay fees to contribute to the general improvement and development of Triathlon in the United States. USAT controls and directs our sport, brings order where otherwise there may be chaos, and facilitates a plethora of sport-specific initiatives from Coaching Standards and Development to Youth Development and Race Rules coordination. Contrary to the belief of some, this does not come for free.
Club dues are also used to pay for club members insurance policy premiums (a USAT requirement), Meetup.com fees, club-website hosting fees, club bank account fees, and supplies that may be needed to support Club-sponsored events. General Liability (GL) Coverage and Board of Directors (BoD) & Officers Coverage policies are required by USAT to ensure our members and officers are protected. The GL and sport accident policy covers each club member during all club-calendared activities. Whether it's a morning run, weekend bike ride, or even a meeting, all club members are covered in the event of injury during these activities. Club BoD and Officers' Coverage provides protection to the club's BoD and officers in the event that club directors or officers are held personally liable for any wrongful act, error, or omission in their capacity as a board member, officer, and employee or volunteer. It also provides protection for our Club if named as a defendant in a lawsuit.
Benefits of being a PRTC club member include having other like-minded individuals to train with and seek advice from on all aspects of triathlon, having insurance that covers you in the event of an accident or injury incurred while participating in a club activity, being able to purchase custom-designed club team uniforms and tee shirts, and receiving great discounts on most purchases at Bike Doctor Waldorf, Patuxent Adventure Center (PAC), and GNC Hollywood (for paid members only).
