Louthers Lake - Beginner Friendly

We will meet at Whipple Landing at 10:00 am. We will not need to do a shuttle.

Due to the river levels on the Big Pee Dee, I am going to change the location and try to do the Big Pee Dee paddle at a later date.

This is still going to be a beginner friendly paddle. We can go as far as we want. Bring lunch, a snack and lots of water. Lowthers Lake is an oxbow lake off of the Pee Dee. It is just like paddling on the river but there is no current. I expect the "lake" to be high but that will not cause any problems. The birds on this water are beautiful. They love to have their pictures taken and will stand and pose for a while before flying away.

Since I went left last time, lets go to the right this time. The main complaint that I have heard for this lake is that the water is yucky. Because there is little fresh water, the water has a lot of algae and you will need to wash your boat at the end of the day. But it is a beautiful lake and very, very beginner friendly. I hope the location change does not inhibit anyone from coming.

This is a meet up paddle. You are responsible for your own actions and safety. You must wear a properly fitted PFD with a whistle. Please bring lunch, lots of water, sunscreen and a hat. Post a comment if you are running behind or can't make it so we don't wait for you. I received the comments on my phone so I will get it. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I had a great time. I can't believe we managed to avoid the 70% chance of storms. Everyone did a great job and I can't wait to see you all again.

I am working hard to find someone to take my kayak to this site. I will be glad to pay for some help. In the meantime asking my neighbors if they be willing to do this favor. Will let you know Friday.

Contact me at NOD if you need to rent a boat and gear for Saturday. I'm going to work out a drop off and pick up for rental boats. This needs to be worked out by Thursday afternoon.

I have signed up as a gift for my husband. He is a novice but has always wanted to go kayaking. He'd rent from Naturally Outdoors or borrow from a friend. Will there be more beginner's sessions? Thanks.

    June 24, 2013

    • Melisa H.

Absolutely. I try to schedule one beginner friendly paddle a month. If your husband is able to borrow a kayak, I can help him with the very basic skills. Paul is a certified instructor, which is something that I do not possess. I would watch for one of Paul's trips, if he needs to rent a kayak or would like more detailed instruction.

I know there has been some questions about renting boats and getting them transported to the landing. Unfortunately even though I am an "event host," I am just an office worker by day and a kayaker on the weekends. I am not affliated with Naturally Outdoors or Swamp Fox Adventures. Because I love to kayak and enjoy meeting new people on the water, I schedule these trips. I wish I could provide kayaks but that is outside my capabilities. When Naturally Outdoors (usually Paul Shaw) schedules trips, he is able to provide kayaks for those trips. I also understand that Swamp Fox Adventures (also Paul Shaw) will guide private paddles. (Of course, all for a reasonable fee.) If you can't make it to this trip because of kayak issues, I sincerely apolgize and hope you will be able to make it to the next one.
