September Book Discussion

Just one book for September, The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton: It is 1866, and Walter Moody has come to make his fortune upon the West Coast goldfields. On the night of his arrival, he stumbles across a tense gathering of twelve local men, who have met in secret to discuss a series of unsolved crimes. A wealthy man has vanished, a whore has tried to end her life, and an enormous sum of money has been discovered in the home of a luckless drunk. Moody is soon drawn into the mystery: a network of fates and fortunes that is as complex and exquisitely patterned as the night sky. A breathtaking feat of storytelling where everything is connected, but nothing is as it seems.

Some pretty high scores from the members! The complexity caused some discussion but we all enjoyed that - and even coped with some of the uncertainty.

I'm so sorry about changing my RSVP at the last minute - I'm going to have to work a bit later today so I won't be able toc come. I hope the meetup goes well. Thanks.

Spoiler alert: The Luminaries explained. Don't listen to this podcast until you have finished the book.

Returned yet another unread copy to the library - I've sprained my thumb and can't hold the bleedin' thing and while I'm not going to point a finger the book was in the same room at the time...

I should be about to wake up in Llandudno at the time, if things go to plan.
