The Importance of Gratitude

Session Development Notes (incomplete)

We as Americans often take pride in having developed the characteristic of possessing a fierce independence. And the pioneer spirit that originally made us a unique and powerful country continues to live inside each one of us. We honor the "self-made man" who has the "John Wayne" image of needing help from no one. While at times such attitude is beneficial, there is no such thing as a self-made man (or woman). Each of us is the product of the work of many others, often in very subtle ways that none of us might immediately recognize.

In this session of People Skills 101, we will explore the many influences in our life that have brought us to where we are today. The emphasis will be on the importance of how our attitude and character are improved by recognizing these truths. We will discuss the benefits to ourselves, as well as to society, for adopting the habit of giving back and being thankful for those who have previously given to us.

To help us in this discussion, we shall draw upon the following published works:

The Power of Giving – by Azim Jamal and Harvey McKinnon
The Generosity Factor – by Ken Blanchard and S. Truett Cathy
It's Not What You Sell, It's What You Stand For – by Roy Spence
Today We Are Rich – Tim Sanders
