Regular Discussion

Members of the Peoria Secular Humanist Society meet on average every other week to have a discussion on varying topics. Some discussions are very structured with specific information being presented by a member while others are less formal. Topics can change rapidly on some of the less formal discussions but members almost always enjoy themselves.

Discussions are open to anyone from active members of the group to newcomers wishing to learn more about who we are. Discussion topics will be posted to this meetup before the discussion but, as always, anybody will be welcome to bring a topic to the floor.

Discussion Topics:

We have discussed the "atheist mega-churches" briefly but it has sparked more debate since then so maybe we can revisit the topic.

We didn't get to the crime fighting religious people last time so we could talk about that as well.

Also, if Bill is able to attend maybe he can talk a little bit about Skepticon.

(Note, I use the word maybe a lot because our meetings are informal and discussion topics are really just suggestions.)

I would definitely like to come and check it out- just have to find a ride. Moving back from living in Chicago- there was no need for a car there! Going to have to get one eventually.

I hope we can tie in the Hug An Atheist movie with looking at what I consider the big deal-that an existence of god is not proven nor is the non-existence proven either. All religions are mere excuses, justifications, fairy tales that take the place of proof. It is time to do the hard scientific investigation to arrive at that proof.

I agree, Walt, that we have no proof either way about the existence of god. But I wouldn't use the words "excuses," "justifications" or "fairy tales" (although in moments of frustration I sometimes want to). Many people believe in a divine parental being call they call "God" because (s)he is a comfort in a world that can be frightening. Although I don't share that belief, I understand why some people hold it: because it meets a powerful emotional need. By the way, you can come up with evidence that something does exist, but at best you can only fail to come up with that evidence, which is not the same as proving it doesn't. I look forward to meeting you and the rest of the group soon.
