Gone But Not Forgotten: The Vintage Collection of Sarah McCartney

!!!!THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT!!!!!

Perfume Lovers London, in association with Basenotes, opens its 2013 season with pizzazz!
Perfumer, wordsmith and one woman marvel, Sarah McCartney, takes us on a tour of some great vintage perfumes from the days before ‘reformulation’ when perfume was often wild, turbulent and so much naughtier than today.
Sarah first started her collection because she wanted to have a reference point for making her own perfumes. We’ll be sampling some of her own creations as well.
Included in the night, the legendary Chypre from Coty, vintage Mitsouko (Guerlain), Bal A Versaille (Jean Desprez), Eau Sauvage, Le Dix (Balenciaga) Schiaparelli Sport.

To further chase the blues away there will be Birthday Cake to celebrate the first anniversary of Perfume Lovers London.

PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL TICKETS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE

There is no doubt about it, Sarah is a great speaker!

Well I had a lovely time, thanks for coming.
I realise that I ought to have let you all smell Says Alice, as that one would have followed on from Deci Dela and In Love Again, rather than heading back into the medieval forest of Lady Rose Lion (Monkey Unicorn)'s deep c chypre. But such is life. I've got a 4160Tuesdays Facebook page, where I do samples and offers and that, so 'like' it if you like that sort of thing. See you soon at another of Lila and Grant's lovely snifforalias.

A great evening, and a lovely chance to smell fragrances I've previously only read about. Bonus: the chance to buy some of them, too! Thanks to Sarah for a great presentation and for bringing such lovely scents along to share with us.

Sarah McCartney - it was such a pleasure to hear her talk, she is terribly witty and truly engaging. If only I had not pretty much drowned my nose at Selfridges just before it started, a dumb move on my part which won't be repeated!

Sarah was both entertaining and informative, and some of her vintage frags were a revelation for anyone who only knows their modern equivalents. A rose by any other name might smell as sweet, but old and new versions of fragrances with the same name sure as heck don't!

Sarah is a natural raconteuse and it's so easy to listen to her and enjoy her knowledge. Every meetup gives me more information, more background and more experience and Sarah's evening fulfilled that for me.

Really enjoyed myself thoroughly; Sarah had me laughing non-stop the entire evening and the vintage perfumes were divine, not to mention Sarah's own fragrances.

Sarah's a wonderful speaker: was great to sniff some old gems! In Love Again the revelation of the night, though!

    Hi Everyone,
There is a tiny vial of Coty's Chypre, this comes courtesy of the lovely Barbara Herman in the USA who writes the Yesterday's Perfume blog. You'll have to share mouillettes, but at least you'll get to have a sniff! There are a few other suprise sample vials which we have Leon to thank for.

Lovely blog, thank you for sharing this find.

Sorry, Lila. I'm looking forward to the other surprises too...

I am intrigued! Thanks for the info, Sarah. I'm really looking forward to it.

A bit of extra info. I am bringing some glorious L'Heure Bleue from the 1930s that smells so amazing you'll faint. But I don't have Coty Chypre. (Lila!) I'm adding Mon Peche to the list too, and I might just bring my bottle of Guet Apens if you ask nicely. You might wonder why bother with Eau Sauvage, but when you smell the 70s version, you'll understand. The Bal a Versailles is 60s. I think you're going to enjoy this...

I wore Eau Sauvage in the early '80s - was it the same formulation then?

      January 17, 2013

    • Sarah M.

As far as I can remember this smells exactly like the people I smelled it on in the 80s. Of course we never officially know, because Dior keep it a secret, but this was before the big EU reformulation wipeout, and when it was still a huge investment for the normally waged.

Alex, You can get a sniff of Le Dix from my website, but if you're coming ot the 27th March event I could bring a little along with me as you can't come.
