Intro to Buddhism

This is one meeting in a long series that will cover the basics of Buddhism beginning with "The Four Noble Truths" (that'll take one month) and on to "The Eightfold Path" (there goes another two months) and then we'll talk about some of the deeper teachings, like "The Three Marks of Existence" and finally do "Dependent Arising". After that we'll see what everyone wants to do next! There will be a little "light reading" and a few links posted here on Meetup's discussion forums for those who like to get an idea of what we'll be talking about before the meeting.

We plan to start the session with a little meditation; this will be followed by a very short intro to the topic of the day, and then we'll open it up for discussion.

Should anyone, at any point, want to interrupt this series with a topic of their own, please feel free to let me know (I'll be grateful for a day off).

We do 15 minutes of silent meditation. If your 8-year-old can sit silently -- no wiggling! -- for 15 minutes, and is otherwise generaly able to be quiet when adults are talking, then yes. My kids are exceptional (19 and 22 now) and I am pretty sure they wouldn't have managed it at 8, but your mileage will no doubt vary.

Would an 8 yr old be able to attend as we'll?

We're discussing the core Buddhist teaching of dependent arising, and are on the end of the first section in which the Buddha explains why we tend to create a sense of self. Meditation-wise, we are going to talk about insight meditation, a practice that leads to mindfulness.
