FIRST CONTACT - FAQS

The following FAQ page has been published to assist you with any query you may have and help you to attend your first yoga event with us. The information contained includes all event information, links to the events calendar that is updated weekly and detailed answers to commonly asked questions.

If you can't find your answer here, shoot us a message by email outlining your query, your name, contact number and a preferred 3hr time frame to receive the call back and one of our team will email or call you back, within 24 hours. Sometimes, our crew are in regional areas and so apologies if you don't get through on the phone line straight away.

WHERE? South Perth Foreshore, to the left of the car parks at the end of Coode Street (facing the river). Once at the end of Coode Street, facing the river, walk left all the way across the car parks and you will spot a group of people with yoga mats under the 3 paper-bark trees. The Google pin listing our precise location is here. We have been in this same spot for 5 years so we are consistent with it.

WHEN?
5.30pm on Mondays
5.30pm on Wednesdays
8am and 9.30am on Sundays

Because our classes are outdoor and we are fortunate to have sunny weather here, our peak season runs from 1st October to 31st May each year. During off-peak season (1st June - 30h September) we only run the 9.30am Sunday class and any other classes that the teachers chose to run, subject to weather being less than 90% likely to rain. Our track record shows that in 5 years we have rarely missed a class we have scheduled on a Sunday and if we don't cancel 12 hours prior and inform you we will still turn up to make the most of the event.

FOR HOW LONG ARE YOUR YOGA CLASSES?
The classes last for 60 minutes during the week and for 75 minutes each on Sunday allowing time for you to attune and ground yourself on arrival and to relax and rest at the end in Shavasana.

HOW MUCH ARE YOUR YOGA CLASSES TO ATTEND?
Classes cost between a donation amount of your choosing to $10 per class, whether for 60 or 75 minutes in duration. Special events outside our yoga classes are priced separately (see specific listings for the pricing of each event).

Single yoga class (75mins)
Adults $10 | Kids $5 | 2 Adults $18

Double back-to-back yoga classes (150mins)
Adults $18 | Kids $10 | 2 Adults $28

Karma Cards (multi-use passes)
5 class pass $45 | 10 class pass $80
6 months unlimited $265 | 12 months unlimited $442

If you would like to submit a copy of your concession card (student, senior or healthcare), you can then access any of our classes and pay a donation amount of your choosing each time you book. This service is provided to support members that experience periods of financial distress, to help relieve barriers that can limit people's access to yoga. Our donation program is funded by the payments of the other participants that you practice alongside.

WHAT ARE MY TRANSPORT/PARKING OPTIONS
There is plenty of free car parking spaces in the car park at the end of Coode Street, facing the city. The 30, 34 bus also runs by this area from and to the city or you can take the ferry from Barrack Street Jetty. Please visit www.transperth.com.au for their most recent transport timetable. Additional paid parking is available on the right-hand side of Fun Cats, should you struggle to find a suitable parking spot. Please be mindful of when special events take place on the South Perth Foreshore and allow extra time on those days to find a parking spot or to negotiate any service disruptions or changes with public transport.

I'M A BEGINNER OR NEW TO YOUR GROUP
Welcome! Our community, outdoor yoga school is set up exactly for people like you and has delivered over 1400 events since 2013. You will be free to take it easy, go against the grain and to honour your body whenever you get the message to.

We will also facilitate conditions of discipline and challenge for those who paradoxically want to practice meditation and pratyahara techniques whilst in uncomfortable yoga postures and situations. Our brains experience and nurture the senses and nervous system responses when we make certain postures and movements. This over time, translates to healthier responses to stimuli and situations off our mat.

Our teachers are fully qualified and insured to guide you, give you cues and physical adjustments should you wish and sincerely care about your well-being. We have spare mats so its all about you turning up to seal the deal of integrating yoga into your routine.

WHAT IS THE BEST APPROACH TO GET FAST RESULTS?
A consistent practitioner of yoga knows that the hard part is just turning up to seal the deal of integrating yoga into your routine. A well practiced yoga participant knows when to back off in a pose and take the slow conscientious 'journey' approach rather than putting focus on the 'destination' (especially when targeting, ligaments and inter-connective body tissue). This could mean accessing the feeling of being a humble learner and having the courage to do, work on the physical, emotional, mental and even spiritual aspects of yourself to see how that translates in your yoga asana practice.

IS IT OK TO BORROW A MAT?
Yes. It's our pleasure to provide a spare mat for you. Please email your request to reserve a mat when booking your spot online, or simply turn up a bit earlier to class to grab one (there's usually plenty to go around). Alternatively, a towel is totally fine to bring also.

WHAT CLASS STYLES DO YOU TEACH?

Foundations of Yoga
This class is for beginners and those wishing to revisit the foundations of Pathanjali's teachings of yoga. Melissa is there to start you off at an easy pace to reinforce and teach you asanas (postures) in a compassionate way to your body, particularly when first learning or returning to yoga for some time. The majority of injuries tend to arise at times when we go from using the body minimally to lots of movement in a short time period, so quality over quantity is taught here. Try to be patient. All good things come with time and practice (you will see this from the development of others around you in the group as the weeks go on).

You will also learn other important aspects of yoga as you become ready, including Pranayama, Bandha (core muscular, energy locks) and basic Mudras (hand and body gestures) to step you up a level in the other classes that you attend with us and at other studios. By the end of the class, you are sure to feel good, have had an optimum workout and feel completely relaxed as the sun goes down at the side of you, while you lay under blanket in Shavasana.

Lead by Melissa Wheeler, originally from Canada. Melissa was trained at the Sri Yoga Ashram in Rishikesh, India.

Twilight Hatha (in-depth):
Our Wednesday park yoga classes utilise Hatha, Vinyasa and Raja Yoga, being the 8 limb, dynamic experience of yoga in a deeper context of correct alignment, philosophy, breathwork practices and pratyahara (preparation for meditation).

Hatha means 'sun and moon' and a well rounded practice already embodies principles of Yin and Yang, which you will learn for a range of postures in this classic style of yoga class. Hatha, in the earlier years of your practice entails shorter time spent in holds and more flow routines (Surya Namaskar) to build muscle, core and pelvic strength. This class also offers you the chance to under-go longer holds and explore challenging asanas that you may not ordinarily practice in your Sunday morning Ashtanga class.

You will get the chance to move the bodies energy around, syncing energy flow with breath as well as building strength and flexibility by accessing deeper asanas. The classes progress to develop concentration, focus, mild inversions and balancing postures before ending with forward folds, mantra or experiences that will activate the 'rest and digest' response of the body to balance the nervous system ready for rest and meditation at the end. The pure learners advancing among us will want to search for the golden nuggets of learning that you can pick up by attending this Hatha class in addition to your Ashtanga practice.

Lead by Will Forde. Will was initiated as a teacher at Anandavan Yog Peeth, Kalimpong, under Deepti and Nikhil Kulshresta in the Himalayas of India and trained under former organiser of this meetup group, Beverley Charmer, in 2015. Bev also received guidance from Deepti and her Guru, Roshan at Yoga Peeth Rishakesh (the first yoga school in India).

Ashtanga Primary Series
Nicole Iovine ('Lamb') leads you through the strict and fun discipline of the Ashtanga Primary Series. Ashtanaga is a modern form of traditional Indian yoga and includes various levels of sequences (primary, secondary, tertiary series and so on). If it is impressive and bold, it is likely to be in one of the Ashtanga series.

The popularised, vinyasa sequence of asanas is prescribed and (when lead by a competent teacher) incorporates the use of core muscular and energetic locks, drishti (focused-gaze), correct alignment, breath-work and a deep commitment to self-love. The practice routinely pays respects to the ancestors of this earth and the gurus of the lineage of Ashtanga (K. Pattabhi Jois, student of Krishnamacharya, the father of modern Yoga). The integrity of the connection between modern practices and the deeper history of this sacred knowledge is a vital part of remaining humble and grounded in this empowering practice.

Ashtanga could be considered the military boot camp classes of yoga, and 'Ashtangis' are normally very fit, flexible and advance quickly when they incorporate the foundations of Pathanjali's teachings of yoga, into their practice on the mat. This includes modifying your poses and following guidance given. You will be politely encouraged not let the ego feel defeated or push you too far when you meet initially, un-welcomed resistance. Here you can meet those sensations and learn to sit beside them in an accepting level of awareness, with less and less resistance the more you practice. (This is what yoga is ultimately training your mind to do). Up until this date we have only taught the Ashtanga Primary Series, which is likely to remain that way for some time, however anything is possible in terms of the progress students may make in our group.

These 2 morning yoga classes are our most dynamic and popular classes we offer, with people from all ages and backgrounds coming out to join the rest of the community that are out walking and doing yoga on a Sunday morning down by the river.

Lamb is a student of Yogi Kamal Singh & Sunil Sharma at Tattvaa Yogashala, Rishikesh, India and returns to serve her school, in addition to the organisations and projects that she is involved with here in Perth.

Yoga Trekking and special events
We also love hosting new events and facilitating ideas that increase social cohesion, celebrate the land and bring people together. This includes taking groups up the Bell's Rapids Goat Trail to the top of the lookout in the hills of Brigadoon and the Swan Valley, on selected Saturday mornings at 8.15am for 4 hours and run Night Trekking Meditation and Yoga Events in the same place on specific dates that the full moon lands on.

Events have more specific guidance and agendas, detailed on their individual listings and include meditation, yoga classes on the hills, swimming and picnicking with mixed groups of locals and tourists. We drive out to the destination separately to practice yoga and enjoying learning from each other out in nature together. Its amazing what a bit of fresh air and yoga can do.

Visit the events page for dates and tickets. For private group bookings please email info@yogatreks.com.au.

I HAVE AN INJURY OR FRAGILE CONDITION. SHOULD I DO YOGA?
We take injury awareness seriously and promote self-love as a foundation of healthy development in yoga and to minimise any risk of you being the injured by making you aware of these risks on our Registration Form.

We don't encourage people to go beyond what you feel is beneficial for your body and you are welcome to choose alternative postures or rest while the instructor is teaching (and will not judged for or penalised physiologically in any way for this). This is important. It is your practice and we are all uniquely different. Should you ever feel like you have been pushed by a culture that diminishes this right of yours, please email will@perthyoga.org where your feedback will be kept anonymous and confidential.

The intuitive approach to knowing your body and listening to what it is communicating to you, needs to be balanced with assurance from a Doctor or GP that can confirm that your condition will be improved by partaking in yoga, especially if you have an injury or are unsure. Yoga teachers are not doctors and professional opinions about whether yoga is suitable for you, should be sought from a qualified doctor if you are unsure in your current physical condition. Your teacher will indicate when particular yoga practices are not suitable to women menstruating, without any need to disclose the fact.

I HAVE AN INJURY OR FRAGILE CONDITION. WHAT SHOULD I DO WHEN I ATTEND YOUR YOGA CLASS?

To help us honour our duty of care to you, we ask that you advise the yoga teacher at the event you attend each time, where a pre-existing bodily condition is likely to interfere with your yoga practice. Examples include past and present injuries, limiting surgeries, pregnancy, high blood pressure, low blood pressure, heart condition, depression, sciatica just to name a handful. You can do this by emailing us or requesting a call back from one of our yoga teachers to discuss your confidential matter via telephone or in person by discussing the circumstances briefly with the teacher prior to the start of a yoga class.

We recommend that you advise your teacher each time you attend of how your body feels at the start of class and any risks and caution you may wish to exercise when practicing that day. This includes advising of pregnancy. Your teacher can then accommodate you better in class and build in practices that may help you improve your wellness. The teacher cannot do this, and may be confused as to your limitation in a posture if you don't own what is going on in your body and communicate it to them, when you get a quiet moment with them at check-in. You can ask them to speak to you away from the group where you can get privacy if you require it. All medical information communicated by you is highly private and between you and your teacher. It will be treated in the strictest of confidentiality by them. Perth Yoga for Everybody does not store medical information about you or combine it with any information we have about you. The exchange of such information is done either verbally or deleted after 72 hours if received by email (once forwarded to the relevant teacher).

By letting our staff know of any bodily limitations you are aware of, our teachers can accommodate the highest level of comfort and safety for you in class, as well as allowing you to affirm your awareness of your limitations and exercise intuitive caution when participating at our events.

I HAVE A WELLNESS EVENT OR SERVICE I WANT YOU TO PROMOTE OR TELL YOU ABOUT
To help you in being great in your role, we welcome all service booking and promotion requests or proposals by email.

If you are connecting with us to inform us about an event, we thank you for sharing your information with us and we will send focused love and blessings to you and vocalise our awareness of the event you share with us to our participants where it feels aligned and appropriate to do so. We receive a lot of messages in this regard and so, if you have approached us for this reason and do not receive a response from us, we simply are unable to engage you, your services or support your event in any extra way and thank you for considering us.

I HAVE A WELLNESS EVENT THAT I WANT YOU TO DELIVER
We provide services for private bookings, including yoga classes (group and one-on-one, meditation sessions, Reiki one-on-one adventure activity leadership (incl. Trekking) and programs for children, government employees and emergency service workers. We often travel far and wide to grab the opportunity to extend the reach of our social mission.

We have a variety of children and adult programs that we can offer, with community pricing/program options available if your organisation department or community group is on a budget. We can also cater to corporate groups and commercial entities wanting to provide yoga to their staff. All our child yoga teachers are WWC registered and insured to work with children, where services are delivered to minors. We also provide waiver and registration options and assistance when working with organisers.

Please email us for a personalised quote or call Will on 0447699871 to chat further about your needs.

HOW CAN I APPLY TO WORK FOR YOU AS A YOGA TEACHER?
We have a growing base of teachers that we share work requests around as an extra service to the community. To join our sub team and get involved please email us and we will send you a secure form to submit your details and any information securely via a digital form we will send you. To grow as a tribe is a big deal and we look forward to meeting and connecting with the leaders of today and tomorrow.

WHAT IF IT RAINS OR IS TOO WET?
In the rare occasion that weather is highly likely to disrupt a scheduled outdoor yoga class, we will cancel and post notice on our Meetup and Facebook page at least 12 hours prior or more, to the start of the event.

If we haven't cancelled the event and the weather is looking dicey the night before, we will still be showing up to make the best of the yoga classes as long as it is safe to do so. If an event is cancelled due to weather, you will receive a full refund for any amount paid. For the full terms and weather announcement procedures please read our
Weather Cancellation Policy.

CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS
If you have booked online and the event is cancelled due to weather or any other reason, you may request a refund of any prepaid donation or ticket fee paid via the platform you booked through, if the refund has not yet been issued to you. Alternatively, you can nominate an alternative date to transfer your ticket value to another event date by emailing us, and including your name and ticket number in the body of the message.

DO YOU RUN GENDER SPECIFIC CLASSES?
No. Our classes are open to all people, of all experiences living or visiting Perth. We provide mixed-gender classes and believe that moon and sun neurological responses are influenced, but not bound by gender or pattern. The organisation recognises that the terms "Feminine" and "Masculine" have become dividing labels in our society and the organisers applaud and promote greater cohesion, communication and validation between and from people of the same gender, either via established men's and women's groups, minority groups or gender specific wellness/hobby meetups. By creating cohesion within gender groups we expect greater cohesion and unity between male and females in our wider Australian tribe. Our Yoga School welcomes Male and Female participants including those that identify with being Gay, Lesbian, Bi or Transgender.
