• Shadyside Meeting - Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan
Please ask at the host stand for the book club. I'm hoping this place works for November. We chose to meet the 2nd Tuesday of the month, since the third Tuesday is the week of Thanksgiving. We are reading Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan. From Amazon.com: From Booklist Kwan’s debut is a scintillating fictional look into the opulent lives of fabulously wealthy Chinese expats living in Singapore. Economics professor Rachel Chu has no idea what she’s in for when her handsome boyfriend, Nicholas Young, invites her to join him at his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. Rachel is excited to meet Nick’s friends and family, but he fails to warn her about the social minefield she’s about to cross. Nick’s mother, Eleanor, jets off to Shenzhen to investigate Rachel’s background, while friends and family gossip openly about her at a gathering hosted by Nick’s grandmother. When Rachel is invited to the bride’s bachelorette party—which includes a ride on a private jet and a stay at a luxury hotel—it becomes clear that these are young women with designs on Nick who will do just about anything to scare Rachel off. From its delightful opening scene onward, this sleek social satire offers up more than a few hilarious moments as it skewers the crafty, rich schemers who populate its pages. --Kristine Huntley

  • North Hills meeting - The Secret Life of Cee Cee Wilkes by Diane Chamberlain
Melissa Gnipp will be host this month. The book is The Secret Life of Cee Cee Wilkes by Diane Chamberlain: In 1977, pregnant Genevieve Russell disappeared. Twenty years later, her remains are discovered and Timothy Gleason is charged with murder. But there is no sign of the unborn child. CeeCee Wilkes knows how Genevieve Russell died, because she was there. And she knows what happened to her missing infant, because two decades ago she made the devastating choice to raise the baby as her own. Now Timothy Gleason is facing the death penalty, and she has another choice to make. Tell the truth and destroy her family. Or let an innocent man die in order to protect a lifetime of lies. Notes about our November meeting: 1. Our book is The Reading Group by Elizabeth Noble 2. We're meeting on November 28th rather than our usual 3rd Wednesday. 3. We decided at the last meeting we'd do our sock exchange again! Buy a pair of Christmas socks and fill them with fun things. Our limit is $15 including the socks. You can fill them with whatever you want but please don't buy everything at the dollar store.

  • Shadyside Meeting - "Carnegie's Maid" by Marie Benedict
Our book for October is Carnegie's Maid by Marie Benedict - this historical fiction novel is set in Pittsburgh! Since we are in between locations, for the month of October, we are going to meet at a member's home - please PM me for details. I have limited the meetup to 10 people. From Goodreads: "From the author of The Other Einstein comes the mesmerizing story of love, power, and the woman who inspired an American dynasty. In the industrial 1860s at the dawn of the Carnegie empire, Irish immigrant Clara Kelly finds herself in desperate circumstances. Looking for a way out, she seeks employment as a lady's maid in the home of the prominent businessman Andrew Carnegie. Soon, the bond between Clara and her employer deepens into love. But when Clara goes missing, Carnegie's search for her unearths secrets and revelations that lay the foundation for his lasting legacy. With captivating insight and stunning heart, Carnegie's Maid tells the story of one lost woman who may have spurred Andrew Carnegie's transformation from ruthless industrialist into the world's first true philanthropist."

  • Pittsburgh West Meetup - The Death of Mrs. Westaway by Ruth Ware
We held off discussion of August's book due to difficulty getting the book from the library so we are repeating. On a day that begins like any other, Hal receives a mysterious letter bequeathing her a substantial inheritance. She realizes very quickly that the letter was sent to the wrong person—but also that the cold-reading skills she’s honed as a tarot card reader might help her claim the money.

  • North Hills meeting - Dietland by Sarai Walker
A FEW NOTES FOR FUTURE MEETINGS: 1. For anyone who likes to read ahead, we've already picked the books for the October and November meetings - October is The Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes by Diane Chamberlain and November is The Reading Group by Elizabeth Noble. 2. Since our normal meeting night in November is the night before Thanksgiving, we will be meeting on November 28th instead. Now, on to our September meeting... Thanks to Melissa Smelser for hosting us at her home for this meeting! I can't wait to see her garden. Since our book is about dieting, Melissa has asked us to each bring some type of food to share that you would eat when cheating on your diet. The book we chose is called Dietland by Sarai Walker: Plum Kettle does her best not to be noticed, because when you’re fat, to be noticed is to be judged. With her job answering fan mail for a teen magazine, she is biding her time until her weight-loss surgery. But when a mysterious woman in colorful tights and combat boots begins following her, Plum falls down a rabbit hole into the world of Calliope House — an underground community of women who reject society’s rules — and is forced to confront the real costs of becoming “beautiful.” At the same time, a guerilla group begins terrorizing a world that mistreats women, and Plum becomes entangled in a sinister plot. The consequences are explosive.

  • Shadyside Meeting - Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman
*LOCATION CHANGE* Just called Sharp Edge to make out reservation, and found out they are closing 😒 For September, let’s try Silkys in Bloomfield - it’s on Liberty near West Penn Hospital From Amazon.com: From School Library Journal Office worker Eleanor adheres to a strict routine that has insulated her from the memories of her traumatic childhood but has not shielded her from loneliness. But after she meets Raymond, she attempts to rediscover her memories and in the process learns how relationships (including those with friends, lovers, and colleagues) operate and that other people can be a source of joy rather than destruction. Readers may find Eleanor odd at first but will feel compassion and root for her as she grapples with severe depression and her painful childhood. Though the novel deals with dark themes, quirky Eleanor's firm bond with Raymond and their adventures lighten the tone. Teens will be spellbound as Eleanor unravels the mystery of her past and develops a sense of self. VERDICT For those seeking a dramatic page-turner combined with a whimsical love story.—April Sanders, Spring Hill College, Mobile, AL
