PPL Membership Fundraiser and "Movie Night"

As announced at last weeks monthly meeting we are conducting an ALL MEMBERS "fundraiser" at The Field House on Saturday February 1st, 2014. For this event we will do the following:

1) we will have a general meeting where we discuss and share "Street Photography Techniques".

2) we will highlight "Street Photography" equipment and hands on demos

At this event Members may contribute to the operational funding of PPL. Contributions are voluntary and not required to attend this event but any amount contributed will go to the operation of our web site, meeting costs and materials for various events. Members who are already at the CONTRIBUTOR or BENEFACTOR level for 2014 are not being asked to contribute additional funds unless they want to.

In addition to the fundraiser you will be able to watch "Everybody Street" which is a documentary film that illuminates the lives and work of New York’s iconic street photographers and the incomparable city that has inspired them for decades. The documentary pays tribute to the spirit of street photography through a cinematic exploration of New York City, and captures the visceral rush, singular perseverance and at times immediate danger customary to these artists.

Covering nine decades of street photography, “Everybody Street” explores the careers and influences of many notable photographers––a number of whom have never been documented, featuring: Bruce Davidson, Elliott Erwitt, Jill Freedman, Bruce Gilden, Joel Meyerowitz, Rebecca Lepkoff, Mary Ellen Mark, Jeff Mermelstein, Clayton Patterson, Ricky Powell, Jamel Shabazz, Martha Cooper, and Boogie, with historians Max Kozloff and Luc Sante. Hope to see everybody there ......... we will be located in the glassed in room to the right side of the filbert street entrance.

Whether or not your passionate about street photography, "Everybody Street" will inspire and motivate you to pick up your camera -- daily -- to photograph - and be ready to photograph - the expected and the unexpected. It will challenge you to explore, question, and understand your own creative process! Bruce Davidson, Jamal Shabazz, and Mary Ellen Mark were among my favorites!

For my inaugural meeting as a new member, I had a great time meeting up with old friends and making new connections. PPL seems like a very warm and inviting group with a lot to offer. I'm very excited to participate and improve my skills. The movie was OUTSTANDING and I plan on watching it again to take some notes!

Movie was good - too long. I would have enjoyed it if someone would have orchestrated a discussion afterwards, perhaps around the points Mike brought up or other issues the film illustrated.

Unfortunately I am stuck in this weekend doing report card grades. I also hope that this film will be shown at another time as well.

what time is this expected to end?

      February 1, 2014

    • Tony J.

Jano, whenever you wish it to end. Itinerary is for some discussion then the film screening, which should take a couple of hours, but obviously, you can stay as long or as little as you like.

Can't you do the "plus one" thing for this movie event? If I come, then my husband will be attending, too (if that's ok). Thanks.

      Absolutely, Vickie.

So sorry I can't make the meeting tomorrow! Have fun. Also, I just contributed to the fundraiser; I understand I am entitled to a badge but you need a "photo" of me in order to produce it. Is the photo I'm using in my profile pic here good enough? Let me know.

    January 31, 2014

    • Tony J.

Kate, sorry you cannot join us - but thank you so much for your donation. I cant use the profile pic, but look for an email soon that contains instructions on how to upload a photo for your badge.

Sorry I will miss this event. I had a poem published in the January edition of an on-line literary and art journal and they are running a Reader's choice contest. Please read my poem and IF you like it, consider voting for it at: www.northernlibertiesreview.com The deadline is January 31st. Many thanks!
