What we're about
This Meetup was created as a way for African Americans to reconnect with their African roots. Come experience Africa, its culture, music, food, fashion and lifestyle through film. Nollywood (African Film Industry) is the 2nd largest film industry in the world. It produces close to a 1000 films per year, yet many of us don't even know about them because they're not promoted or shown in American theaters.
Our goal is to change that. Being that we are "African" Americans we owe it to ourselves to get a sense of where we come from and get in touch with our African roots. We are planning on having a recurring monthly event where we will showcase a Nollywood film in our private theater for all to enjoy. Join us, connect with us and help build our group so everyone can benefit from each other.
A little over a year ago after searching for something to watch I stumbled upon a Nollywood movie. I watched and enjoyed it, then I found another one and enjoyed that as well. So I shared them with my family and they also enjoyed them. Since then we've been hooked. They're not big budget million dollar movies but yet I find them interesting. Maybe its because I'm able to experience a part of Africa first hand when I watch. Maybe it's something in me that connects with these films. For one thing it helped me to see the similarities and differences in African and American culture. It also helped to extinguish a lot of false presumptions about Africans that we as African Americans were somehow led to believe. We are very similar and through watching African movies I was able to see this. I enjoy them and I'm sure you will too and have your own personal experience with reconnecting with your distant cousins...
