Come to PhillyRBs first Gem Day to hear short talks from several speakers who will share exciting tales of their most useful or exciting Ruby Gems.

Doors open at 6pm, talks will start at 6:30pm

VCR - Mike Dalton (https://twitter.com/kcdragon_)

Overview of the VCR gem which is used to cache http requests while running tests. Practical examples will be provided.

Webpacker - Rob DiMarco (https://twitter.com/iotr)

Rails 5.1 rolls out with built in Webpack integration through the webpacker gem. I'll go in to how to install and use the gem.

Rack - Ernesto Tagwerker (https://twitter.com/etagwerker)

Many Ruby developers use Rack, but don't interact with it or know how it works. We'll look at how we all use it and the middleware available for rack-based applications.

Shoryuken - David Roberts (https://twitter.com/DrobTravels)

Shoryuken allows your Ruby on Rails application to easily integrate with AWS Simple Queueing Service (SQS) for background job processing using ActiveJob. We'll learn about how to get it setup, and how this makes it convenient to interact with other (ruby or not) services.

zero_downtime_migrations - Rob DiMarco (https://twitter.com/iotr)

When creating migrations, it is easy to create a migration that will run smoothly in production but cause downtime when running in production. The zero_downtime_migrations gem minimizes the risk of this happening.
