If you enjoy discussing the big questions in life with like-minded people, you’ll love this group.
We'll meet monthly, somewhere in the Tonbridge / Tunbridge Wells area. Depending on numbers, we’ll form individual discussion groups of 5 - 7 people, including a facilitator where possible. The idea is for people to discuss a pre-determined topic (to be agreed by group members), just for the enjoyment of the conversation.
To give you an idea of what to expect, example discussion topics by similar groups include the following: ‘What is the Point of Punishment?’, ‘Why Are We Here?’, ‘Is There Free Will?’, ‘What is Beauty?’, and ‘Do We Need the State?'
Meetings will be free of charge, although discussion over dinner (to be paid for individually) would be a good social combination. However, if you’d like to just have a drink, that will also be fine.
Philosophy in Pubs (PIPs) is a grass roots community organisation promoting and practising community philosophy in the UK and worldwide (see https://www.philosophyinpubs.co.uk ). The purpose of PIPs is to bring people together who enjoy discussing their ideas and thoughts, and learning from each other. PIPs provides some useful supporting materials and guidelines, although we can adapt them to suit us.
No academic or formal background is necessary, just a passion for enquiry. The only fundamental requirement of PIPs is 'Respect for Others and their Opinions’, as it encourages people to put forward their ideas without fear of ridicule, intimidation or hidden agenda.
