Next week is predicted to be free of rain! Many species of birds call this area home for the winter, including the sandhill cranes. Depending on parking, we may start with shooting some small birds around the Cosumnes River Preserve, where there are thousands of birds, then move around by vehicle for the cranes and flocks of other birds. Bring the longest lens you have for closeups of the birds or consider renting one through our borrowlenses sponsor link on this page. Long lenses will probably be needed for the cranes in particular. The above shot of group of cranes was shot with a 500mm lens and 1.4x teleconverter, for an effective 700mm. . The usual disclaimer applies for wildlife--the birds may lay low or give us great in-flight shots. We will meet at the visitor center at 13501 Franklin Blvd, Galt CA. Parking can be a challenge, so if it is an issue I will pass out the word on-site on where to go just down the road. See www.cosumnes.org. The effort level will be minimal, with the longest walk being .5 miles, but even for that, you will not have to go more than 20 yards to get shots of the birds.
