Centro Hispano of Dane County (http://www.micentro.org/) is looking for a small group of volunteer photographers to lead 10-12 kids on a photo scavenger hunt as part of their Photo Voice photography project on Monday, July 14th, 2-4PM.
You will be working with middle-schoolers on a photo scavenger hunt around Centro Hispano while talking to the students about photography basics [i.e. composition, lighting, camera settings, etc.]). Lauren Deakman, Centro Hispano Project Coordinator, will lead the day's workshop and is our main contact. As she says, "these are kids who come from the age of 'any photo can be good if I Instagram it', it would be great for them to learn how train their photography eyes (i.e. what is good light/not, finding patterns/lines/spirals/etc, take photos of still things vs. moving things, etc.)."
The goal of the Photo Voice project is to help middle school students explore and talk about their communities through photography. The scavenger hunt session is aimed at teaching kids about basic photography skills and/or talking with them about their own photography.
Each student will be using their own camera to practice taking photos around Centro Hispano. The students will take the cameras home each week to explore their own neighborhoods. By the end of the project they will create displays that will be presented at several art events throughout Madison. The displays will be comprised of the students photos and explorations of their communities.
You are encouraged to bring your own equipment. The kids will have basic digital point & shoots, but it would be great for them to see how people use a range of cameras to get different kinds of shots.
This is a great opportunity to share your love of photography with young people. Share what you know and make an impact on someone's creative life. But please sign up only if you can commit to the event. It can't go on without you!
Lauren will provide a list of photo scavenger hunt items. You should be prepared to talk about how you got into photography, show your equipment, how to care for equipment and relate it to the kids’ cameras, what to look for when taking photos (composition, lines, patterns, color), and then lead/co-lead groups of 3-4 kids around Centro Hispano on the photo scavenger hunt.
