September Monthly Meeting -- Landscape & Photo Blogging

The theme everybody has been practicing this month (you have been practicing right?) was landscape photography. We take the first part of the upcoming meeting to share what we did this month, and discuss each others photographs. This is great opportunity to get feedback on your images, as well as learn techniques and tips from other local photographers.

After we have shared our photos we will have a guest presentation from our very own Beth McWilliams about Photo Blogging. This can be a great way to get exposure for yourself and your images. We get some insight into the how and why of photo blogging.

______________________________________________________

For those of you that are new or are just confused of the format here's a rundown on how the monthly meeting goes.

Meeting Timeline

Pick three slideshow:

I will present a person's pictures, ask that person to introduce themselves, and then talk a little about one or two of their images. Next I will give the group an opportunity to offer up praise, constructive criticism, or ask questions about that member's pictures. Then I will move on to the next member's photos.

Technique Presentation and Discussion:

After we have shared our images, I or someone else will give a quick (20-30 min) presentation on the monthly topic. After the presentation I like to take some time to engage the group about the technique and answer any questions and get others to give their insight and experiences.

General Discussion:

When we are done with everyone's photos I will open up the group to general discussion. This gives people a good opportunity to get questions answered by a large diverse group of photographers. Sometimes we will continue the discussion over drinks nearby.

When to submit your pictures

As to the source of the slideshow photos, the week before the meeting I will begin pestering those of you who RSVP'd yes to submit your photos.

Where to submit your photos

To submit your photos post them to our Flickr group: http://www.flickr.com/groups/madphotomeetup/ and make sure to tag them "September2012Meeting" or they might get missed.

What to take pictures of

As for the subject of your pictures, this is very open. The monthly techniques are intended to be somewhat of a homework assignment for you to practice over the following month so by all means submit these pictures if you were able to participate. Otherwise anything goes (but please keep it PG-13). If you have a picture you just love send that. If you have a picture that didn't turn out right and you want help submit that. In the end, what is really important is that you just go out and shoot, so show us what you did.

When to take your pictures

The goal of this "show and tell" is to make sure people are getting out and taking pictures. So I would prefer it if the pictures have been taken since the last meeting. If you are new to the group then by all means pick a few from your portfolio you are especially proud of, but I don't want to see the same pictures month after month.

Really interesting topic and interactive discussion. Thanks again to everyone who came out to the meeting, one of our largest monthly meetups yet!

I enjoyed the meetup and hearing what others feel about the different photo's shown. Landscape is such a varied subject it's hard to pinpoint what makes for a great shot. It was nice to learn more about blogging even though I have little interest at this point.

    Good meeting.

Yes I do think we don't have any group photos yet because:
    1) photographers are camera shy and don't like their photo taken
    2) we wouldn't be able to agree who would take the photo with what camera, what settings and lighting to use, the composition and arrangement of the subjects, what equip would be needed (tripod, off camera flashes and reflectors), and what photo shop post-processing to use. ha ha

Great presentation for those looking to get started blogging. Also some of the best participation we have had so far for the pick three, and some great shots from people. As always it was also great to catch up with people afterwards.

I will be a few minutes late - coming from north of Portage so it's a little over an hour's drive for me.

totally works for me to go first if need be :)

Could we have Beth's talk first in case some people need to leave early (like me)? Also, since we have such a large group attending should we do a group photo for the meetup site? I know we will be pressed for time but just a quick one with no tripod or setup and participation would be optional. I can bring a camera but am not sure I will be there but maybe someone else will have a camera. I just find it ironic that we have no group photos of our photo club.

Nobody knows, it's never been done.

There may be a reason we all choose to be behind the camera

I missed the landscape talk. How do you define a landscape photo? Anything taken in horizontal landscape layout? Or just nature landscape photos?

brian, here's a great link.....and like i thought, landscape shooting is very wide and varied !http://www.thephotoar...

In my mind a landscape is any grandiose static scene. Be that trees, mountains, or even cities (ie a cityscape).

Should the the tag for this meetup "Sept2012Meeting" instead of "Aug2012Meeting"?

    August 7, 2012

    • Adam C.

      Yes indeed it should

      August 17, 2012

  • Kris H.

Yes, the tag should be "Sept2012Meeting". I'll make the edit above. No theme yet, stay tuned!

Is there a theme for October yet?
