UPDATE 13.02.2014

Hi all,

To follow up with some more details on this event, I have put together a proposed timeframe for people who may wish to take the train. Please be advised that it requires one change at Denderleeuw.

OUTBOUND:

From:Bru.-Centraal (http://www.belgianrail.be/Station.ashx?lang=en&stationId=8813003&) To:Geraardsbergen [NMBS/SNCB] (http://www.belgianrail.be/Station.ashx?lang=en&stationId=8895505&) 13:16 dep - 14:22 arr

RETURN:

From:Geraardsbergen [NMBS/SNCB] (http://www.belgianrail.be/Station.ashx?lang=en&stationId=8895505&) To:Bru.-Centraal (http://www.belgianrail.be/Station.ashx?lang=en&stationId=8813003&) 20:34 dep - 21:57 arr

or

From:Geraardsbergen [NMBS/SNCB] (http://www.belgianrail.be/Station.ashx?lang=en&stationId=8895505&)To:Bru.-Centraal (http://www.belgianrail.be/Station.ashx?lang=en&stationId=8813003&) 21:38 dep - 22:44 arr

With this in mind, we should arrive at 14:22, giving us about 30 minutes to get in position for the start of the parade. I think one of the key photographic opportunities will be the "Tonnekensbrand" at 20:00, as it should be an exciting spectacle.

I included the 20:34 train as an option for people who may want to leave earlier, as it is quite a long day, though you may miss some of the "Tonnekensbrand" activities.

For all those taking the 13:16 train from Brussels Central, I propose that you meet outside Starbucks at 13:00, as a way to gather all the group. I also propose that you purchase your train tickets in advance online. I am still undecided as to whether I will take the train or drive, but I will either meet you at Starbucks or in Geraardsbergen.

• If you are taking the train, please put your name down on this Doodle: http://www.doodle.com/wmesfbw6sfd96xwb

If anyone knows for sure that they will drive and are happy for members to join them in their car, please post a comment in the group, to let everyone know. Normally, we meet at White Night on Montgomery roundabout when sharing transport.

Looking forward to the event, hopefully it stays dry and we get some great shots as well as meet new people :) .

A bientot,

Jon

UPDATE 05.12.2013

Hi all, I received some more info from the tourism agency this morning:
The historic parade starts at 15:00 h, in the centre of the city at 'Hunnegem'. Of course, because of the big success every year, I advise you to come a bit earlier.
From Hunnegem, the parade goes throughout the streets of the centre of the city, up to the highest top of the 'Oudenberg'.There, near the chapel of the Oudenberg, the parade ends with the throwing of the 'Krakelingen'.
At 20:00 h the "Tonnekensbrand" is burned on top of the Oudenberg while folk dance sets the atmosphere.
It is possible to travel by train from Brussels to Geraardsbergen. On Sunday, your trip to Geraardsbergen will go via Denderleeuw, where you will have to change to another train. You can find the exact hours in the station of Brussels."
So it looks like public transport may be an option, the following looks like a suitable schedule, allowing us enough time in the afternoon to try get good positions and enough time in the evening to watch the "Tonnekensbrand" and get back to the train station.
Out:12:27 dep13:27 arr
In:21:34 dep22:33 arr
Of course driving is also a possibility, though since it's a festival atmosphere and quite a long day, people may want to have a drink, in which case public transport would make sense.

Initial message:

Hi all, I mentioned to Claus about an event I saw recently and he proposed I suggest it to the group. I saw photos of it online a while back and thought it looked interesting, it's called Krakelingen & Tonnekensbrand and is held on Sunday February 23rd in the city of Grammont/Geraardsbergen, about 1 hour drive west of Brussels. http://www.geraardsbergen.be/content/content/record.php?ID=2195

There could be potential for some good shooting opportunities, lots of costumes, day & night activities, fire and druids! If you do a Google Image search for "Krakelingen & Tonnekensbrand", you can get an idea of what to expect.

Cheers,
Jon
