What is Pickleball?

Pickleball is a highly contagious sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong using a paddle and plastic ball with holes. It is a game that is appropriate for players of all ages and skill levels. The rules for pickleball are simple, making it a great introductory sport. It can also be quite a challenging, fast-paced, and competitive game when people become more experienced at playing.

Whether you’re a beginner who just wants to learn a new sport for fun, or you’re a seasoned player who craves the thrill of more competitive play, pickleball offers something for everyone. WHY NOT GIVE IT A TRY!

Why is Pickleball so popular?

• It is easy for practically anyone to learn how to play the game.

• It is a social activity. Because a pickleball court is one quarter of the size of a tennis court, the game allows players to be close enough to one another that they can hold conversations.

• If you are looking for some great exercise for your mind and body, pickleball is ideal. Playing pickleball allows you to work on your balance, agility, reflexes, and hand-eye coordination without putting excessive strain on your body.

• Because pickleball can be played both indoors and outdoors, it’s an accessible option for recreational facilities of all types.

The History of Pickleball

The game started in 1965 in the U.S.A.

Today Pickle-ball is played all over the world through community groups, PE classes, PCYC Clubs, YMCA, retirement communities and more. According to a recent article, there are now more than 3,000,000 people playing Pickle-ball in the US alone, and the game is growing exponentially.

Pickleball Down Under

The sport came to Australia via Gabi Plumm, president of the Pickleball Association of Australia. She learned the sport while visiting her son Morgan Evans in the US four-and-a-half years ago.

Evans won the 2016 US Open Pickleball Championships. "He said 'I think you should do this because it will be easier for you to play than tennis' which is very true," Ms Plumm said.

Since returning to her home in Cairns, the game has steadily grown as Ms Plumm has spread the word of pickleball.

In Sydney, Bob Mendelsohn has been responsible for the rapid growth of pickleball since November 2017. It was first played outdoors in Seven Hills and is now being played at six venues, namely The Rocks, Dee Why, Five Dock, Hornsby, Wahroonga and North Ryde. More venues are in the pipeline.

On 13th October 2018 the inaugural Australian National Pickleball Championships were held in Marrickville.
