2.Masspire - Brian Case

Summary of Concept: Masspire is a site designed to help people start a creative career.

The Pain Masspire Addresses: success in a creative field often depends more on good fortune or good connections than being good at creating. Many talented people never breakthrough. Masspire is built to give people a free and fair opportunity to get the first push they need for broader success.

How Masspire Does It: Masspire works through creative competitions. It gives out nine different awards to people who participate, some of which depend on winning, some of which don’t. The awards consist of the three things all small creatives need to grow: money, promotion, and freedom.

Business Model: Masspire makes money when users sell their work through the site. Masspire will also release official “best of” collections. This aspect of Masspire is what I’m most proud of: Masspire makes money in a way that also benefits its core users.

The Business Hypothesis: 1) The internet is dominated by first drafts, because success doesn’t mean much. If people had a concrete expectation of a future benefit, that would give them a reason to try harder and work on improving their skills, thus improving the final product. 2) There is a very large market of creators who are underserved, acutely feel the pain we are solving, and will be desirous of a solution. 3) The competition structure will be an effective mechanism for separating the good content from the not so good content.

Personal background:

I’m a front-end designer, focusing heavily on both the what and how of design. I also have a lot of miscellaneous skills that come in handy like: copyrighting, SEO, UX, testing, analytics, and I have a law degree. I also really, really, love Rock N Roll and strange art, which is a large part of the reason why I wanted to make a site like this.

What if any specify any technologies you have decided on?

-Vanilla PHP, I do want to weave in a framework but I am waiting for a more permanent technical team to decide on one.

Some traction – the site is up and iterating.

4. tickl.me - Peter Imbres

tickl.me is the best way to discover and manage the events that matter to you on-the-go.  By leveraging your social profiles and a simple setup process, tickl.me provides zero-click utility in finding timely location-specifc events based on the things that you like to do, without making you sift through exhaustive event listings that are irrelevant to you.  You can even use it to plan for future events.  The dynamic calendar can be seamlessly integrated into any major calendar application so you can manage your entertainment in the same place you manage the rest of your life. By focusing on the mobile user experience and the utility of social profiles, tickl.me hopes to change the way people discover the cultural events that define their communities and enrich their lives by making the process simple and enjoyable for all.

Personal background:

Peter Imbres has been working in online marketing and emerging media for roughly 15 years. Prior to becoming a consultant, Peter was an SVP with Hill and Knowlton's digital group in New York, working closely with brands ranging from HP to The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.  As a consultant, Peter has focused on delivering innovative brand marketing with an emphasis on creating measurable frameworks for success.  His recent projects have included the digital relaunch of the Nike Vision brand to the creation of a social engagement index for brand pages on Facebook.

What if any specify any technologies you have decided on?

tickl.me will launch as an iOS app with simple web-based profile management.  A web version of the application was built and shelved a couple years ago but the platform decisions for the future iterations have yet to be decided.

What sort of a position are you looking to fill?

My primary goal is to find a technical lead to help manage a somewhat aggressive development process through launch and beyond.  Their ultimate position will depend on what level of commitment they can make to the business.

What sort of compensation or benefits are you offering?

I am open to both equity and paid arrangements (or a combination of both) for the right partner.

What stage of development are you in?

Though the concept has been built as a fully functioning web app, I consider it to be in the idea stage now that it is transitioning to becoming a mobile app with new features and benefits.  I'm committed to self-funding the app through the minimum viable product stage and gaining some traction in one market before exploring funding for expansion into multiple markets.

5. Kindara Fertility Management - Will Sacks

We're building the Quantified Self for Fertility. Kindara is a fertility management platform that helps couples manage their reproductive health and meet their goals using their own fertility data and personalized support. By analyzing daily fertility signs Kindara gives women new insight into their cycle. Users can see if they ovulate, find the optimal time to conceive, identify barriers to fertility, and get expert help and recommendations. About 75% of Kindara's users are using the system to help them get pregnant faster, while 25% are using Kindara to avoid pregnancy or understand their cycles. Our first product Kindara for iPhone is ranked in the top 2% of health and fitness apps in the US App Store, and we're excited to build out our web platform and Android app. Our vision is to use personal data to give millions of women and men a better experience with their fertility. The future of fertility is personal and data-based and we feel poised on the verge of something big.

Personal background:

I'm a mechanical engineer who previously founded the energy efficient lighting distributor Lumetro.com. I spent most of the last 5 years building dashboards for large buildings to help them use less energy. Then I met my wife Kati (a fertility nerd and designer) and we saw a great opportunity to build a dashboard for our fertility that would allow us to practice natural birth control and learn amazing things about her cycle.

What if any specify any technologies you have decided on?

No decisions made yet. We're evaluating using a service like Parse.com to take our user data off the iPhone and store/sync it in the cloud.

What sort of a position are you looking to fill?

First non-cofounder & technical lead

What sort of compensation or benefits are you offering?

Below market salary + above market equity

What stage of development are you in?

We launched in May and just passed the 10,000 download mark. We've got 3,000 returning weekly users doubling monthly.

6. Abroad Insiders - Jonathan Saft

I want to create a website that changes the way students and young adults travel abroad. AbroadInsiders.com will offer comprehensive previews of the top abroad destinations around the world, including descriptions of day-to-day life and reviews of the best restaurants, bars, clubs, sights, and activities in each city, all written by students for students. The site will also include a social component that allows students across the world to plan trips and include their friends in their plans.

Personal background:

I moved to Boulder about a month and a half ago after majoring in Communications and Spanish at Vanderbilt. While at Vanderbilt, I spent 5 months studying abroad in Buenos Aires, so not only do I understand my target market well, I am just two years removed from it. I am now working in the digital marketing department at Finish Line.

Technical co-founder

What sort of compensation or benefits are you offering?

Equity
