Learn To Code #StarterSeries

Introducing the Code & Supply Starter Series! Each month we will hold an event focused on teaching the basics of programming to newcomers.

Chad Whitacre will lead a "group coding" session, walking everyone through a small coding project that focuses on a specific skill area.

After the coding project is completed, there will be time for asking questions related to the project or something that you are building on your own.

To sweeten the deal, we'll have pies from Drew's Pie Supply.

Even if you’re no longer a beginner, consider joining us and pairing with a newcomer. We need mentors too!

Our Starter Series is presented in Partnership with the Sprout Fund and the Saxifrage School.

Special exceptions will be made to RSVP limit for experienced programmers willing to lend a hand to TA/assist

Missed the first one, can I jump on for the second?

I am a Newbie to Python, have used Awk and labview and C once in the far past.

Broken heartedly pulling my RSVP as my LO is reporting from daycare sick!
But I will for sure be at the 24 Pull Request build session Monday!

    December 2, 2014

  • Kim L.

I'm extremely sorry to miss this but have had something come up last minute at work, and want to make sure someone else can take my spot if they want to attend.

    December 2, 2014

  • Benjamin S.

With a heavy heart, I am pulling my RSVP as I need to go play for an unexpected children's choir rehearsal, but I signed up for Jan 24. Hope to see you all then if not before! Hope someone else can enjoy my spot tonight. :)

How much knowledge do I need for Build Night? I've programmed before (Visual Basic programming and HTML hacking/repurposing), and have some grasp of theory. Should I be looking over any particular language basics to get myself up to speed on the language in preparation?

      December 3, 2014

    • Justin R.

Build Night is built very well for all skill levels. Come with what you know. If you have something you're interested in learning, Build Night is a good place to do so because there will be experts in the room to help with just about anything

  • Chad W.

Hey all, I'm looking forward to coding with you tonight! I think we'll start with this little security-related issue and go from there: https://github.com/gratipay/gratipay.com/issues/2978.

Today ended up being so crazy that there is no way I can attend tomorrow. I just changed my RSVP.

Maybe next time! Just announced the date: http://www.meetup.com...

Awesome, thanks I signed up. January is definitely better than December for a guy in retail.

I have no experience with python!

For when we break off and work on small projects: Does anyone have experience using Knockout.js?

    December 2, 2014

    • Tim C.

We'll definitely have some JS folks here tonight helping out, be sure to ask one of them!

      December 2, 2014

  • Alok

Really want to be there but I am expecting a long long day at work. Changed my RSVP

Experienced folks willing to help, could you reply to this comment with what you're able to help with?

I'd be glad to help out in any of the 4 categories, though my ruby, python, and css are a bit rusty. Any expertise I might have would be in JavaScript and git.

      December 1, 2014

    • Tim C.

Oh! Sorry Joel, et. al. just realized, I think that Justin will need to add you to the Gratipay Team.

Sorry for the late notice, but also am no longer able to attend. I am changing my RSVP, and hope someone on the waitlist can take my place. Thanks!

p.s. we're hoping to get @drewspiesupply (https://twitter.com/drewspiesupply) to come out of hibernation just for us.... cross your fingers for homemade Pies.

    2 · November 11, 2014

    • Chad W.

      Nice! :D

      November 13, 2014

    • Tim C.

Rumor confirmed that there will now be spiced cider as well!

      1 · December 1, 2014

  • Anastasia L.

What language will we be using?

    November 30, 2014

    • Justin R.

Chad will be walking through an issue on Gratipay. Showing what it is like to work with code from problem to solution. That's written in Python

      1 · November 30, 2014

    • Tim C.

Anastasia, Chad's session is for the first half. During the second half we'll break out into smaller casual groups focused on other topics/languages.

      1 · December 1, 2014

  • Brian M.

I wanted to go, but I got a bit of some sickness and didn't want to pass it around. ;) Someone else can have my spot. Enjoy the pies!

    December 1, 2014

  • Justin R.

Another reminder to update your RSVP if you can't attend. We have 6 people on the waiting list and the event is on Tuesday

    November 29, 2014

  • Matthew B.

If you're still looking for more people to help out I should be able to make it.

    2 · November 28, 2014

    • Justin R.

Added you as an RSVP yes

      November 28, 2014

  • Justin R.

The event is now full! Maintain your RSVP appropriately if something comes up that means you can't make it. We'll have a waitlist and also open a few spots after we look at the balance of experienced people to newcomers.

    1 · November 19, 2014

  • Benjamin S.

Hoping to make it, my work schedule permitting.

    1 · November 11, 2014

  • Brian M.

Wouldn't the little coffee shop get a bit crowed when more people go? Is there an alternate venue?

    November 11, 2014

    • Justin R.

We'll have a nice setup at Voluto, with a projector and all. If it gets to around 40 people, I'll start making other arrangements for a venue.

      2 · November 11, 2014

  • Chad W.

Hey all, I'm looking forward to this! The plan is to take pair programming to the extreme and have 20+ people on one keyboard! Actually, I'll be on the keyboard and we'll have my screen on the projector. We'll pick a simple bug or feature from the Gratipay project and work collaboratively together through the whole process of fixing it and deploying the fix. The goal is for you to see and feel what "real programming" is like. Hope you can join us! :D

    November 11, 2014

  • Kip K.

What will we need? (Laptops, OS, etc?)

    1 · November 10, 2014

    • Chad W.

Thanks for asking, Kip! The format will be geared towards you *not* needing a latop. If you have a laptop feel free to bring it along. You'll be able to look things up and try out your own ideas as we write code together!

      November 11, 2014

    • Chad W.

      s/latop/laptop :-)

      1 · November 11, 2014

  • Kevin S.

I'm 50/50 whether I can make it. If the group is too big and someone wants to go and will definitely go please let me know and I'll drop out.
