About the play "Blithe Spirit" by Noël Coward
Following a séance with the quirky Madame Arcati, Charles Condomine finds that his late wife Elvira is back and determined to have him to herself–much to the dismay of his current wife! Blithe Spirit playfully mocks the traditions of love and marriage while thumbing its nose at the Grim Reaper.
With witty repartee and physical comedy, don't miss this production of this timeless classic. Fun for the whole family!
Written to entertain London’s beleaguered audiences during World War II, this comedy tells the story of Charles Condomine, a novelist who hosts a séance with the quirky clairvoyant Madame Arcati in order to gather background material about the occult for his book. However, much to Charles’ surprise, Madame Arcati not only successfully makes contact with the ghost of his first wife, Elvira, but now Elvira won’t leave him alone – and his second wife, Ruth, is none too pleased!
This classic play had its world premiere in 1941 and at that time created a new long-run record for non-musical British plays of 1,997 performances. It was also very successful after it opened on Broadway later that year. Noël Coward also adapted the play for the 1945 film (starring Rex Harrison) and directed a musical adaptation, High Spirits, on Broadway in 1964. Blithe Spirit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blithe_Spirit_(play)) was also adapted for television in the 1950s and 1960s as well as for radio. The play enjoyed several London and Broadway revivals in the 1970s and 1980s and was revived again in London in 2004, 2011 and 2014. It returned to Broadway in February 2009.
And in the course of its rich history, Blithe Spirit has attracted some of the most well known actors and directors from around the world.
Fun Fact: the last professional performance of Blithe Spirit in Pittsburgh was in 1971, and featured Helen Wayne Rauh, who even more remarkably played Madame Arcati in the 1945 production!
But for this 2014 production, PICT has assembled an exceptional cast, led by Mary Rawson (as the quirky Madame Arcati), Dan Rodden, Daina Michelle Griffith, Vera Varlamov, James FitzGerald, Karen Baum, and Lissa Brennan. Don't miss this classic by the famous playwright Noël Coward http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No%C3%ABl_Coward who was also a composer, director, actor and singer, known for his wit, flamboyance, and what Time magazine called "a sense of personal style, a combination of cheek and chic, pose and poise"
While other Noël Coward plays have been staged more recently in Pittsburgh (such as "Private Lives"), "Blithe Spirit" hasn't been professionally produced since 1971.
And if you can't make the Tuesday May 6 show, please consider checking out one of the other performance dates during May 1-17 as shown in the schedule below.
