Enterprises are beginning to migrate on-premises databases, including data warehouses that support mission-critical data and analytics workloads, as part of larger cloud-first and hybrid cloud strategies. Due to its cost-structure and hardware footprint, Teradata is a prime candidate for replacement as part of moving to the cloud.
Pivotal Greenplum is one of the few that offers the full range of data warehouse functionality enterprises demand. It's open source query optimizer (http://engineering.pivotal.io/post/gporca-open-source/) has become the industry standard for MPP systems and related projects like Apache MADlib (incubating) (http://madlib.incubator.apache.org/) have a strong following among data scientists. Pivotal Greenplum is available in the cloud on AWS and Microsoft Azure, which makes it a compelling alternative when moving from Teradata on premises to the cloud
Challenge/Concerns for Enterprises?
Due to Teradata's specific-SQL dialect, migration is a concern for many enterprises because of the complexity to rewrite, reconfigure, and rewire all their existing applications. Historically, application migrations for analytical workloads are known to take years and up to one and a half times the cost of the Teradata appliance.
Solution to all headaches
We recently partnered with Datometry in creating a solution called Hyper-Q. Hyper-Q enables enterprises to gracefully offload the right workloads you choose when and where it makes good business sense. Hyper-Q provides Teradata customers with an Adaptive Database Virtualization software layer that impersonates Teradata Database using Pivotal Greenplum Database. This means your existing Teradata Database applications (ETL, BI, Dashboards, Custom Apps, etc.) can all run natively on Pivotal Greenplum without any changing of source code.
Here is a 6 minute Demo to see it in action:
