What we're about

We're a group of like-minded people who love to read and discuss many kinds of wonderful poetry, from all different ages.

We meet every week, choosing a different poet for each time, hole up in a nice pub, and enjoy sharing about the book.

I will share a short list of poems from the given author before each meeting in advance, so you only to read a few poems to be able to discuss and enjoy their work.

You are very welcome to just come along without having read anything, and just absorb the poetry and learn something new.

Poetry Book Club - Selected Poems by John Donne

Auberge (Waterloo area)

For this poetry discussion we'll be reading and discussing various poems (listed below) by John Donne, an English poet and writer living 1572 - 1631. His early works were often sensual, erotic and even bawdy, a fascinating contrast to his later and more famous poems which are more religious and visionary. He writes with a lovely rich language and imagery, and is well worth getting to know a bit :) We'll be focusing on these following poems (which you can easily just read and/or print off online), but feel free to bring along anything else you like by him: - The Good-Morrow - The Flea - To His Mistress Going to Bed - Holy Sonnets: Batter my heart, three-person'd God - A Hymn to God the Father Looking forward to meeting you there. If you can, bring along a text of the poems.... either printed or in a book, or just from your phone, as it's nice to read along. No worries though if you can't get your hands on something.
