Member Series: Come celebrate the winter solstice with us. Ted Ehmann will preview his forthcoming book. Ehmann's research focuses on the beliefs, symbols, ritual and mythology that unified the Calusa and Mayaimi ( lake people ) for 25 centuries in south Florida. Together and with members of a trans-continental religious cult, they built 4 monumental ceremonial centers around Lake Okeechobee, the "sacred lake". The first ritual center was the Great Circle, a[masked] feet in diameter circular ditch on the Fisheating Creek 9 not shown ). They built 8 more great circles all over south Florida by 1700. Ehmann believes that these sites are the most important by hunter-gatherers in world history.
