While excavating the mound/pond mortuary site at Fort Center, in the 1960s archaeologist William Sears unearthed dozens of charred carved animal and bird effigies and hundreds of human remains from the once mortuary pond that was below the charnel platform. He theorized that there was a fire that destroyed the site. Ted Ehmann's research indicates that is was no accident and that hostile neighbors raided the site and desecrated the sacred burial place in about 800 A.D. Ehmann relates how common these tactics were and how historically, anthropologists avoid ascribing such violence to the prehistoric Native Americans.
