**COVID Update** We are not currently meeting at Panera. While the weather cooperates, we meet (socially distanced) in a park in Portland. When the weather cannot accommodate an outdoor meeting, we meet over video chat. Please contact the organizers for specific details! To reduce the number of emails, we also have a GroupMe group chat for making calls about the weather and where to meet.
Hello and welcome to PAWWC! Here our goals are to socialize with other women writers and to help each other by providing an encouraging environment and giving constructive feedback to improve our skills. We emphasize creating a safe place for women writers to share their work and helping each other with our writing goals. Our members submit a wide range of different types of writing, including but not limited to novels, picture books, memoirs, personal essays - even cover letters!
Membership dues cover the cost of keeping the MeetUp Group active so we can continue welcoming new members!
Our bi-monthly Writing Discussion Group meets every other Wednesday night from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Panera Bread at the mall (343 Gorham Rd, South Portland, ME 04106). During these meetings, we discuss and critique two pieces, which are decided via volunteers at the previous Discussion Group meeting.
On the following week, we hold a "Writer's Read & Respond".
Please come to the meeting having already read the two pieces we will be discussing. We encourage you to make comments to give to the author. You can either make comments on the uploaded document itself using Google Docs or print out the piece and hand-write comments on the paper to give to the author.
In addition to our MeetUp.com page, which can be used to leave comments to the group, we also have a mailing list. We send out an email to the mailing list before each discussion meeting, with links to the two pieces we will be discussing. Make sure to give your email address to the host, Shelli, so it can be added to the mailing list. This email is also the email you will use to access the shared Google Drive, which has folders for each member to upload their work.
Once the host has added you to the mailing list and the Google Drive, you will receive an email with a link to the Drive. There you will see these Guidelines, a document with the mailing list with a link to our GroupMe chat, and a Sign-Up Sheet. The Sign Up Sheet has two slots for each date. On a volunteer, first-come-first-serve basis, you can add your name to the sheet for us to discuss your work at a future meeting.
Please keep your submissions to about 15-20 pages max. If you’re writing a novel, one or two chapters each meeting might be best. Once you’ve uploaded your piece to your folder in the Drive, make sure you open the document as a Google Doc (which allows others to leave comments on your piece). Take the link of the Google Doc and copy/paste it next to your name on the Sign Up Sheet, so others can find your piece easily.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. We’re here to help!
