• Data Discussions - Cloudability

    Cloudability

Special Note: This is not on the first Monday of the month but the second. I think this is a great topic for data professionals as well as other technologists. Profocus: http://www.profocustechnology.com/ MILKRUN: http://www.localmilkrun.com/ -Ian Frantz

  • Applied Data Science — Speech Recognition — Part IV of IV

    PSU Business Accelerator

For June, we'll be working in small groups to build algorithms that identify which words are spoken in short segments of audio. Everyone from beginners to experts is welcome. As always, our three objectives are: 1. Provide skill-level-appropriate challenges to all participants. 2. Participants collaborate with and learn from one another. 3. Those who attend all four Sundays finish a project they can add to their github/resume/portfolio. Bring your favorite data analysis software! We're language-agnostic. If you don't already have a favorite analysis tool, here are a few suggestions: http://goo.gl/W8Q6cV

  • Python programming — More Data Science without Data Frames

This is a follow-up to a seminar we held back in February (details below). You're still welcome to join us even if you weren't at that earlier session. Please bring some data you're working on and we'll help you build a custom data structure for it. Any kind of data, in any format. Also, please note the special location for this one-time event! ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: Not every data analysis task in python requires firing up the pandas module. In this hands-on session, we'll explore how using generators along with custom class definitions can sometimes make for more efficient and more readable code.

  • Applied Data Science — Stack Overflow — Part IV of IV

    PSU Business Accelerator

In our April series of small-group, hands-on workshops, participants will go through the entire data life cycle. First, brainstorming interesting questions to ask about user activity on Stack Overflow's parent website, Stack Exchange. Next, using SQL to obtain data from Stack Exchange's database, which is available to the public. After that, any reorganization or cleaning of the data needed to ready it for statistical or predictive analysis. Then, extracting answers as best as possible. And finally, refining the whole process of formulating questions and finding answers. Everyone from beginners to experts is welcome. As always, our three objectives are: 1. Provide skill-level-appropriate challenges to all participants. 2. Participants work with and learn from one another. 3.
