With sunshine and great views predicted, let's head up to the mountain and snowshoe Boy Scout Ridge. We'll have splendid views of Mt Hood and get a glimpse of Timberline Lodge and maybe even a sighting of Mt. Jefferson and the Three Sisters.
Distance: Around 5.5 miles loop. Modest elevation gain.
This snowshoe includes some back country trekking and may include breaking trail. We'll be doing some short but steep climbs. We'll also be doing some backwoods travel. This is not a beginner snowshoe, but it's not super difficult either. You should have some experience snowshoeing and be comfortable climbing up and down steep slopes.
What to bring:
Snowshoes and poles. We will be descending and traversing some steep terrain - you will want poles.
Traction devices such as Yak Trax or Microspikes are optional. We will not be stopping to rent, so please have your gear when we meet at Gateway. We're not stopping to buy sno-park passes - if you plan to drive please buy one at REI, Bi-Mart or other outdoor stores. Please gas up ahead of time.
- Waterproof boots or snow boots.
- Sunglasses and sunscreen
- Pack a pair of rain pants or snow pants.
- Hat and gloves
- Whistle and the ten essentials.
Glissading pad (optional, but there are places where you could glissade on the return)
Be sure to dress in layers so you can peel off as it will get warm in the sun as we climb. NO COTTON.
Bring $10 gas money for drivers. It is 110 miles round trip from Gateway. Please indicate in your RSVP if you can drive and how many can you take. A snow park pass is required to park at White River on 35. (I will drive and I have a pass). ODOT says you should carry chains, though we won't need them with the nice weather.
This trip is not suitable for dogs or small children.
We'll meet in the parking garage at Gateway Transit Center and leave at 8:30 sharp. Please arrive a little early so we can leave on time. Again, if you plan to drive please gas up ahead of time and have a sno-park pass. I plan to be back in Portland by or before 5 pm and would like to get an early start. Hopefully we can head home around 3 pm and beat the worst of the ski traffic.
