Palmateer Point via Twin Lakes

  • Jun 21, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

TOTAL MILES: 9.1 miles
ELEVATION GAIN: 1500 ft
PACE: “Nice & Easy” (~2.5 mph)
DIFFICULTY RATING: Challenging
ESTIMATED HIKING TIME: ~6 hours
PERMITS: NW Forest Pass (drivers)
***RSVPs will open at 7:00pm tonight***

CARPOOLING: RT mileage is 120 miles, give or take; we suggest a mileage donation of 10 cents/mile/person, or $12.00. Exact change makes it easier to divide among our drivers. No one will be turned away for an inability to contribute. Thanks!

School’s out for the summer which means that I can finally get back to hiking on Fridays Starting from the Frog Lake Snow Park, we’ll hit the PCT and follow it about 1.5 miles to the junction with #495, which we’ll follow down to Lower Twin Lake. Once at the lake, we’ll stop for a short break and then get back onto #495 and take it past Upper Twin Lake, where we’ll turn onto #482 and go past a viewpoint of Mt Hood on our way to Palmateer Point and lunch. Once we’re done there, we’ll take #482 back to the PCT, which we’ll then follow for 3.5 mellow, moderately downhill miles back to our cars and home (check out #79 in Sullivan’s 3rd Edition).

Please note that there is a MANUAL waiting list for this hike. What this means is that if a spot opens up everyone on the waiting list will automatically receive an e-mail notifying them of the opening. The first person (whether on the waiting list or not) to RSVP gets the spot.

NO DOGS, please.

What to bring:
• Sturdy hiking boots/shoes with at least one change of socks
• Two or three light layers of clothing that can be adjusted or removed as necessary (NO COTTON!!!)
• Rain gear (you never know)
• Safety whistle, preferably on a cord around your neck (highly recommended)
• Insect repellant
• The 10 essentials*
• Lunch, snacks and plenty of water
• Trekking poles (never a bad idea)
• Camera (optional)

*Navigation, Sun protection, Insulation, Illumination, First Aid, Fire, Repair Kit/Tools, Nutrition, Hydration, Emergency Shelter. For a more detailed description, check out “The Ten Essentials” on the Portland Hiking Meetup Group’s FILES page.

I would love to bring my dog, an 8 year old border collie. She gets along with everyone and all animals. She is a great hiker... Please let me know what you think. I am happy to drive:) School is out and I'm ready to hit the trail!

Can you change your RSVP Leslie, so that someone on the waiting list can go? THanks!

Now I know Amanda's dog is cool and I would hike with her in a second, but I still prefer no dogs on group hikes, because we end up with 7 of them!

Zack, thanks for a wonderful hike. The weather really turned out much better than expected and it was a great group of people. Amanda, thanks for suggesting the Skyway Bar and Grill. What a great place!
