Forest Park 80-mile Challenge, Hike #1

  • See description in text below.
  • WHEN: Friday, February 7, 2014
    TIME: 11:00 am
WHERE: BPA Road Trailhead on Skyline Blvd
TOTAL MILES: 7 miles ELEVATION GAIN: 1,773 ft
    PACE: 3.0 mph
    PERMITS: None required

Forest Park has over 80 miles of trails and my goal is to hike all of them this year. I will be designing routes that will help me accomplish that goal and I'd like to invite you to come join me in the challenge. Because not all of the trails can be done as an independent loop it will require hiking more than those 80 miles to complete the entire challenge. THIS IS NOT AN EASY HIKE! Don't let the 7 mile distance on this hike fool you as it is a tough one due to the steepness and condition of the trails. It's more like Dog Mountain than the typical Lower Macleay to Pittock hike you might be used to. The book “One City's Wilderness” by Marcy C. Houle lists portions of this hike as “strenuous”.

We will meet at the BPA Road Trailhead on NW Skyline Blvd, take the BPA road downhill to explore the two forks of Firelane 13 and 13A then take the rest of the BPA road to Newton Rd where we'll hike the Wildwood back up to the BPA Road and return to our starting point.

This is Portland so expect rain and mud and an occasional flooded creek crossing. Wear waterproof or water resistant hiking boots and bring your trekking poles. Wear lots of adjustable layers as you'll be hot on the way up and cold on the way down. Bring a lunch or snacks and plenty of fluids.

To reach the trailhead, drive NW along NW Skyline Blvd 5.6 miles from the intersection of NW Skyline Blvd and NW Cornell Rd. The parking area, which is just past Milepost 9 on NW Skyline, can accommodate up to six cars. It is somewhat difficult to see as it is off the road, near a row of mailboxes with numbers beginning at 9640. There is additional street parking about 50 feet south of the BPA road which can accommodate another 10 or so cars. The easiest way of knowing you are in the right place is to look for my big white camper van.

What to bring: • Sturdy hiking boots/shoes with at least one change of socks • Three to five light layers of clothing that can be adjusted or removed as necessary. No Cotton! • Traction devices (only a suggestion at this point but be prepared to be turned away if the conditions are icy and you don't have traction devices) • Rain gear • Safety whistle • The 10 essentials* • Trekking poles (never a bad idea) • Lunch, snacks and plenty of water

*Navigation, Sun protection, Insulation, Illumination, First Aid, Fire, Repair Kit/Tools, Nutrition, Hydration, Emergency Shelter. For a more detailed description, check out “The Ten Essentials” on the Portland Hiking Meetup Group’s FILES page. Please remember that I'm simply a volunteer inviting others to join in on a hike, I'm not a professional guide.

I must insist that everybody be responsible for their own safety and well-being.

Bummer, I don't think I'll make it driving across town with the predicted road conditions. Look forward to future hikes!
